inthedeep2 Sep 14, 2007 08:44 PM

CAN YOU OWN VENEMOUS REPTILES IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA FOR ANY OTHER REASON THAN EDUCATIONAL PERPOSESS?
FROM WHAT I HAVE READ IN THE DGF MANUAL SEC.671 7 (E) MOST RATTLESNAKE SPECIES ARE NOT RESTRICTED AM I UNDERSTANDING THIS RIGHT?

Please don't use capitals in the future please.

Only venomous snakes found in California can be kept with a state permit but only two of each species. However, many local cities & towns prohibit even that. You need to check for local laws too.

Hey Al-
Did you mean to say without permit? Or have the folks in Sacramento been mucking with the regs?

It was my understanding that Rattle Snakes in California were for the most part the only species of snake that is not regulated. Even the rules say they can be taken by any mean dead or alive at any time of year without a sport fishing license. They do however fall under some general rules such as it is not legal to relocate them unless you first get approval from the DFG. hmmmmm I just got my 07 handbook maybe its worth a read.
