Fire Bellied Toads

1.) Is there a way to tell a male from a female? The people at the pet store are not very helpful. They just said if you get tadpoles and eggs you know. That doesn't help me much when I want that and I am not getting anything. 2.)One of my toads is was brown when I bought it and now it is starting to get green in some spots. What is it doing? Is this normal? and 3.)Do they eat anything other than crickets? Chrickets are cheap and all and that is good but I feel like they should have variety. I am new at this so can someone help?

Well, I'm it's very difficult to sex male from female when you buy them. What I would do is put a toad in with another toad in a small critter keeper, and if it sings, then it's a male; otherwise, it is a female. I think that females don't croak, so if yours do, then it is a male. Another way is during a mating season, in the spring, when the male develop a nuptual pad on each of his forearm. I'm not sure exactly where it is, but you can find out on a number of site. And besides that, during the mating season, the male will sing and hump each other. Come to think of it they do that, also, when I'm feeding them. Why do you want to know how to sex them anyway? Do you want to breed them?

I know one of them "sings". Which one I don't know. It has either been dark in the room or I have been in another room when it happens. My dark one seems to grab and hold on to the green one and at times it fights it off and others it doesn't. We would like some tadpoles eventually. I would like my 8 year old daughter to see the changes that they go through to become adults.
