Trans Pecos Ratsnake Behavior

JL1981 Sep 16, 2007 01:14 AM

I purchased my first trans pecos at Daytona. He is doing great, however, he does have one little quirk when it comes to feeding. I feed all my snakes in separate plastic feeding containers. With my graybanded king and my thayeri, I put them in the container, add the f/t pinky and they eat immediately. My trans pecos, however, will not eat in front of me. I try waving the pinky and tease feeding but he will not eat in my presence. In fact, he shows almost little to zero interest in the food. He will inspect it when it first goes in, but then nothing. I have tried turning out the lights, but as long as I am there he seems too preoccupied with exploring. I found that if I put the mouse in with him and I put the feeding container in the closet with the lights out, he eats almost immediately.
Anyone else notice this kind of "shy" feeding?

Also, as of recently, when I am in the room he will wake up at odd hours (like 12pm-5pm) and crawl around his enclosure. Is this normal?

I place mine in a large covered shoe box with some df mice or rat pups. They, like most snakes, like to eat "quiet". When finished I give the box a light misting of plain vinegar to disenfect.
