Thoughts on this clown?

JenHarrison Sep 16, 2007 03:39 PM

I have the chance to get this breedable '06 male clown for a really fantastic price from a really reputable person. I normally like the really reduced clowns, but I think he looks nice too. I'm also thinking in terms of producing nice babies that the consumer would be interested in buying/trading (as well as hets that would produce nice babies). What do you guys think of him, is he what you would look for in a clown?

Jen - as someone who loves clowns and loves the reduced patterns as well --- if it were me I'd pass and hold out for one that I really really love. That's not to say it's a bad looking clown - there are far worse out there - but if it's not what you want why buy it?

That being said - I don't think you'd have any problem finding someone to buy offspring - I think next year will be the year of the clown - like Carmels were this year - lots of them and their hets out there at good prices.

If you do buy him - make pastel hets.

Just my 2 cents or 4 cents due to inflation.

Well here's the thought process I have with this guy. The super-reduced ones that I like are way out of my reach and I have a limited amount of money to work with right now. I do think this guy is really pretty but I was just curious as to what kind of clowns other people liked too. I have an adult female het clown that is more than ready to breed this year...and I was originally going to do a breeding loan with her but the loaner clown isn't really that spectacular -- he definitely doesn't compare to this one. If I bought this guy and bred him to my girl, then we would get to keep all the babies instead of splitting them. See what I'm thinking about?

As long as it doesn't hurt you financially, I would do it. I think he looks great. You could have babies this season and trade or sell the breeder male (if you aren't happy w/ the pattern) afterwards and all the babies could be yours, instead of splitting them. I find it hard to believe you couldn't recoupe your investment rather quickly. Just my opinion. Joe

Exactly my thought process. I do like him, and I can always get my perfect reduced no-spot clown later on. I'm just thinking I want to avoid doing the breeder loan if possible.

This isn't hurting me financially, the VA finally got off their asses and sent me my compensation they've owed me over the last 2 years. I got a nice check -- we're doing some responsible things with it, and then I'm buying some snakes for myself. I deserve it after all the crap I went through to get that money.

I can relate to your feelings about the VA. They can be pretty darn slow when it comes to passin' it around. Two years worth of back pay sure can come in handy eh? Please do something responsible with it first, then git nuttz

Is your female at least from a reduced line? If so - perhaps there's still a chance?!?!?!

In all - it would mostly depend on if you are ok with spending that kind of money and settling? Do you just want to breed for the sake of breeding or do you want to create something spectacular? There's lots of garbage out there and lots of selectively bred stunners and a whole lot in between! What's important to you - what's your goal - where on that continuum do you want to be?

Good luck!!!

I want to breed spectacular animals, but realistically I can't expect to start off right at the top. I have to work my way up there, which (in my thought process right now) is where this male would start me. People do have multiple animals of the same morph so they can produce variable mutations -- some people like the more spotty ones like this guy, some like the super-reduced ones like me. I wouldn't have a problem with having this guy and then having a reduced one as well and working with both.

Jen, I think you just answered your own question. And I agree If you have the oppritunity now for something you like which you seem to then go for it. Later you can add another male from a reduced line and work on out crossing your hets or visual hold back. Good luck!

Jeff

I think he looks awesome!

Thanks Jeff!

Now I'm all excited to get going on this clown project. Keep your fingers for me that they breed well and I get lots of eggs!

Hi Jen,

The male Clown is a nice looking Animal. When you can, purchase a BHB female het from an "extreme reduced pattern Clown". Breed when big enough to your Clown male. Hold back some of the most reduced patterned babies you produce and selectively breed them to refine the "look" you like. You diversify the blood lines and produce great Clowns.

I hate to think of anyone calling a Royal Python garbage. I’m sure Tosha was not being so literal but instead just pointing out how extreme their patterns can be.

I have never seen a clown which I would consider "garbage". Futhermore, I've never seen a Ball Python I would consider "garbage". Yes, some do look better than others but I think your choice of words is a little harsh.... By the way, if you have any garbage clowns send them to me.

If you have an adult het female. Buy a het male from someone that has nicer clowns. Then buy into something else you like with the extra money.

I don't want to deal with het x het breedings, too many people last year got no visuals from their het clutches. I know that is still a chance with visual x het, but it's less of a chance. My husband lent me the money to buy the het female so I pretty much have to improve my chances of proving to him that it was worth it.

I always thought a clown was a clown. With that said, it would also be easy to make your own reduced pattern Hets. All you would need is a reduced/banded Female.

Just_Ders Sep 16, 2007 09:17 PM

clowns are clowns

BrandonSander Sep 16, 2007 10:21 PM

That's an awesome looking clown, but if you prefer the more reduced pattern clowns... I say save your money and look for one of those. Otherwise, you'll be kicking yourself in the ass every time you look at him.

JenHarrison Sep 16, 2007 11:14 PM

Actually, I never regret purchases. I do want a reduced clown, so if I get this guy, then I'll get one of those at a later point as well.

I would buy him. I also think if you have a female het that is ready to breed, then you cant go wrong. You can easily make your money back just by selling 1 clown and all the hets. Also If your finances allow it I would pick up a female pastel if you dont already have one and breed the clown to her as well, pastel het clowns are hot right now and will be for some years to come. And last you cant go wrong with purchasing any animal that you truly want and enjoy working with, plus clowns are awesome and retain value very very well.
Good luck

JenHarrison Sep 17, 2007 01:07 AM

I really like him and I'm definitely going for it. He will help me get to my super-reduced clown as well as other things. Plus he's coming from someone that I really look up to and have learned a lot from, and have wanted to buy something important from for a long time.

My girl is definitely going to go this year, as is my het g-stripe female (the breeding loan is still going to happen with her since I can't get both a g-stripe and a clown without my husband divorcing me...LOL!). This spring is going to be nerve-wracking as I wait to see how things pan out.

I think you've made a good decision, becuase although he may not be EXACTLY what you are looking for, I don't think you will regret it. He's gorgeous and I love the wash in his stripe pattern. He's a beauty. I just hope you post picks of the babies next year!!
