My two striking serpents

iant Sep 16, 2007 06:22 PM

While cleaning my baby macklot cages I was wondering when and if they will settle down? Bites from a tiny python are tolerable, a 6-8 footer doesn't sound to fun. Well any experienced advice is always appriciated. many thanks

Ian

My big girl settled down at about the 6 - 7' mark. She was "nippy" the whole time beforehand though. Let me know if you want me to hang on to them till then! LOL

Yeah, well worth the time and blood IMO. Once you've got a handle on their dispositions, it gets easier. Unlike some other pythons (especially Burms), they ussually give you a pretty good indication that you're about to become an involuntary blood donor! I actually find it easier to handle a larger snake that's apt to strike than a smaller one. That's an extra few feet you can put between you and the chompers. LOL!

I am now just being able to handle my Macklott's free hand. Actually the first day I had her she got me. Then about a month ago her hooked on for a good 5 minutes before I was able to get her off. She/he (not sure) is a 5 1/2ft mack. Great snake, just meanest of the ones I currently own. I am actually thinking of selling her because I am getting more into rat snakes and rear fanged species.

I concur. My female macklotts calmed down very much in only a couple months. She is now only about a year old and maybe 3 feet, and she is very tame out of her cage... enough so that I feel comfortable taking her out for anyone. In her cage is another story though... I feed her in her cage and always use a hook to take her out. She will not hesitate to bite in or above here cage.
