just a hypothesis but probably the same abscence of red/yellow just when incorperated in differant locales they chose to alter the name, the Axanthic appears to be the lighter animal and the Anery seems to be from the darker cousin??? just an observation!
Specificallt, anery could lack red while an axanthic would lack yellow/orange. The origin of the pigments is related so the names may not always be precise. Meaning that sometimes they are called one thing when they actually are the other.

i agree definitions are only as good as they are percieved,i wonder why the Red algae is called Asta-Xanthin,maybe it should be asta-Erythis(sp.)..........
