Chilean Chuckwallas

UroGuyFromNY May 22, 2003 08:44 AM

I'm writing to see if anyone else has had or have Chilean Chuckwallas, Phymaturus sp.

They came into the country on a regular basis back in the early 90's. I owned a pet store back then and had a few in my store..
I liked them so much I decided to take some home to work with them.. I had two gravid female that gave birth (they give live birth, no eggs). But they just didn't seem to do all that great. I finally sold them to another pet store.

What I'd like to know is if anyone else has had them and if so, what was your experience with them.

I'm adding a chapter on The Chilean Chuckwalla in my book about Chucks. Any additional info gathered would be great!
Thank you for your time

Aaron

I got a little overzealous and purchased one that was wasting away about ten years.

It was an odd critter. I thought I could get it on the right track with the usual: dandelions, collard greens etc and some supplements

I was kinda young and naive... didn't realize that my minimal chuck and des iguana keeping skills probably weren't exactly what the herpotologist ordered

Information on these guys was harder to get a hold of than the phone number for the girl with grey eyes who walked phantomwise that senior year

damn.... still guilt ridden over that goofy little Chilean

I smell CREOSOTE woohoo!

that was wasting away about ten years. >>>>>

I meant that this happened about ten years ago... poor critter didn't set a wasting away endurance record

Hi, I had 3 of these back in about 1993. They didnt fare very well. I took them to the vet when they looked poorly and they were treated for parasites. They wasted away rather quickly. There was NO husbandry info out there. Probably still isnt.

I had a few dozen of these in '92-'93 that I had picked up from either Strictly or Roberts Serpents and maintained one as a pet for about a year. I ended up selling him due to a move and before I new it, they closed them down. If anyone knows anyone that might still maintain a few, please let me know as I would think they would be interesting to work with again.
