What To Scent With?

manog Sep 17, 2007 03:44 PM

Hey All,

I have a picky western and some picky mexicans that i have yet to get feeding. I do not have access to any wild toads (i am in coastal so cal) but do have some access to tree frogs and lizards. Can i scent with the tree frogs? Also, i have the typical pet store stuff available (i.e. firebellys etc) Do these work?

Thanks

Have you tried tuna scent? Some people have found that scenting with the spring water from a can of tuna will work. If not, you should be able to scent with anoles, I believe.

Yup.. I had one eastern hog that would NOT touch a mouse unless it had tuna scent on it. Took me almost a year to wean him off that behavior LOL. I would keep a couple of frozen blocks of tuna water in the freezer.. then just rub the mouse on the block before feeding the mouse to the snake.

If the fish scent doesn't work try braining.
I get more of my Mexi hatchlings on
brained pinkie mice than fish scent.

Thaw the pinkies in hot water to reduce
the mouse scent before scenting with fish
or braining.

I was having a problem with two of my westerns refusing everything. I tried live, f/t, tree frog scented, toad scented, tuna scented, and brained. Next week would have made two months of not eating they haven't eaten since I've had them. Today I tried salmon water and within a minute both were eating the f/t pinks. My last resort was going to be anole but this worked for me. Good luck.

If you have access to house geckos, try scenting with them. I go out and catch a bunch of Med Gecks and pop their tails off and release them. I freeze the tails for a couple of days. Then wash your F/T pinkies off with water and rub them together with a couple of gecko tails in a sandwich bag. Works great. The tails will work over and over for quite some time. Once a hognose is used to taking a scented pinkie out of the forceps, they become more of a sight stimulated feeder and less of a scent stimulated feeder and should switch over without any problems.
