Does Cage Size = Gecko Size?

AndrewFromSoCal Sep 18, 2007 06:23 PM

I'm only wondering, because my little guy doesn't seem to be growing as fast as I thought he would.

Or maybe i'm just expecting too much growth too fast. (probably that)

He's still in a 10g, about 7 months old, and waiting. Now, he's got a 37g ready to go, but I don't know..it just seems like a huge jump in space.

Therefore, I was wondering. Do Cresties grow to their living conditions (I know, they're not goldfish, but still..), or will they outgrow a cage irregardless?

Ostlyn?

I guess I'm glad that I apparently have a rep for giving good advice, but I don't know for sure on that one. One of the breeders who frequents the board would be better able to answer that question.

Well, I'm not Olstyn, but I stopped posting when I got into a similar argument he is currently in last year.

Cresteds should reach maturity somewhere around 9-12 months. So, honestly, you are getting close there. I can also tell you our little girl seemed to grow in spurts, she'd kinda level out and then you'd wake up one day and she'd gained an inch.

I would be of the opinion, that with enough foliage and a few extra hides and plenty of "safe" darker zones in the larger enclosure, s/he could probably move in anytime and be fine. But then, I am always of the opinion that a nearly to full grow geckos enjoy space, my spoiled leo has a 20gL all to herself and my crested has about a 20g high, thought I've considered something bigger for her too. She likes to flop a lot.

Good luck, sounds like you are doing fine.

Yes, they can outgrow their enclosure... They do not grow to the size of their enclosure. Many people keep their geckos in cages too small for them and they will get as big as in any other cage.

I only call on you, Ostlyn, because I think you may actually be a person. I hadn't seen you in awhile, sleepy, so my appologies.

The behavior of a lot of people on Kingsnake boards these days has been pretty ridiculous. A lot of the oldies are gone, and it seems a lot of people who got their animals a number of weeks ago are now dishing out 'expert' advice.

So thanks, guys. As soon as I can get the hydrotron (my local hydroponics store has only had 100g bags lately..yikes!) i'm planting the 37g. Then the Squirt can go in.

I was also wondering if anyone had tried those magnetic feeding trays from Pangea. If so, how do they work? Does your gecko know it's there? Feedbackkkkk.

Thanks,
Andrew

I haven't tried them, but I want to. People who have tried them said they liked them.

Haha. That's why I don't post much, too frustrating most times.

I have known people to have used those suction cups with various results. (I have even heard of offering ground and high and the gecko never touched the high.) The specs on those magnets SAY they hold up to 12 pounds, but the engineer in me says that is static weight and doesn't feel like doing the calculation of a breeding weight gecko flopping from a high height with velocity into a full bowl of snacks and water.

There are some that have claimed high level feeding is better as it simulates the natural environment better. I'm on the fence. I'm more worried about what happens if something breaks or slips or similar and how that might hurt/ pinch/ or startle the gecko. On the other hand, you are talking about a reputable company. Boy, I'm not much help at all tonight, probably all things you have already thought of.

Given the active level of my gecko, I would prefer safe as possible over any other consideration. Then again, my little girl is known for kicking her thermometer where ever she wants it, painting her cage with CGD, and shaking the table with her jumps and flops.

If you do try one, do be sure to let us know how it works out for you.

I tried the magnetic ledge thing. I put it in with two of my juvinille females, each weighed less than 25g at the time. When I checked the next morning it was upside down on the bottom of the tank (thank god neither were injured). I haven't used it since. That is just my experience with it.

On the website it says you can get more magnets to support larger gecko species, I might order some more and see if that strengthens it. However, I will not be using the ledge in my multiple-gecko enclosures. If I had it to do over again I would order the "stand" type instead.
