Researching rainbows...

unicorn118 Aug 21, 2003 04:59 PM

I'm new to rainbows, new to boas for that matter, and I'm doing some preliminary research before making a decision to purchase a pair of Brazilians. I've read a few websites, including Jeff Clark's who seems to be at the forefront of providing this species' care info. Great site, I loved it.

I'm just curious about any other websites to read through, and also suggestions for the best handbook to buy. I am especially interested in learning more about breeding this species. I have quite a bit of herp experience, mostly with various geckos and ball pythons, so I'm fairly confident in being able to provide proper care. I'm just wanting to fine tune my knowledge before I start looking for a pair to buy.

Also, if any of you would like to contact me via email on any adult pairs you have for sale, please feel free. I will probably be looking to buy within the month.

Thanks,

Valerie

Sorry, forgot to ask:

What are my best choices for enclosures for these guys? I've read tanks are not good because of the humidity requirements. What are the standard size measurements for a cage for an adult pair? Also, for breeding purposes, do I need to keep the male and female separate till breeding season?

Thanks again

Valerie,
. There is no one book that covers Rainbow Boas and their care very well. There is limited information about them in many books. I think the ideal cage for a pair of adult Rainbow Boas is a 4 foot long box style cage like a Vision or Boaphile plastics. I have many of my adults in 36 inch Visions. This cage size seems okay to keep them healthy but larger cages would probably be better. I place duct tape over all of the ventilation screens. The only ventilation is the small airspace around and between the sliding glass doors. This holds humidity in pretty well. I keep males and females seperate from each other until breeding time. You could keep a pair together most of the year and seperate them a little before breeding season and reintroduce them to breed.
Jeff
