Introducing, Bettys brood....lotsa pics

rainbowsrus Sep 19, 2007 12:17 AM

Did a full tub change on all the babies, those first set of dampened paper towels are quite dirty very quickly. All my favs are up first. Two pics of each.

Each year I have to relearn the nippy nature of a newborn BRB. They nip at anything that moves. Each and every one of them struck at me. Most struck several times and most tagged me. Some got me several times each!! LOL but it doesn't hurt, very few bites drew any blood at all, kinda funny how big and bad they act.

Here are the twelve healthy normal ones...

And the unlucky thirteenth one with an eye problem. I've seen something similar on a soaking adult BRB. The adult got a bunch of water under one eye scale. When it shed, everything was back to normal. Looking closely at this baby, it appears the eye scale is way distended, even distending the surrounding scales. If you look closely you can see the same "ring" of connective tissue between the eye scale and the surrounding scales that you would normally see in a shed skin except it appears stretched tight. Looking into the eye with a light and magnifying glass, I believe I see an eye deep inside. Lastly, the bulge is soft, didn't want to mess with it too much. Will have to wait and see how it's first shed goes!!

i am really sorry this is so long really i am

they all look great but sadly number 13 brings back alot of bad memories to me. i had a reptilicus reptiles naomi line female jungle carpet python cost me $400 she was the sweetest thing ever with stellar colors for a baby great eater great color great temper everything was perfect about her but only about 2 months after i got her her eye started to swell up BAD it was slightly larger than the pic you showed so i went to the vet they werent specialized in reptiles but have deal with them and otehr exotics and knew there stuff etc but it was also a emergency place it was around 5:30 and wasnt able to get to the real real good reptile vet so i never had a problem like this before so i took her to the animal emergency center and they were confused also but they drained the eye of its fluids and said come back for a check up if anythign happens again so i get home post somethign on the morelia forums and somethign was said on there about somethign like that happening with some1 elses carpet but it was fluid that kept building behind the eye i dont rememebr full cause or what it was called etc. well 2 days later the eye is back to bein swelled up i take her in i talk to them about what i have heard they looked around in some books made some calls to some other reptile geeks lol the vet had a friend who was a really good reptile vet in another state. and the best bet was to remove the eye well surgery went ok snake made it thru but died only a week after and also got mouth rot from the surgery the eye was so big it actually extended the mouth also so my loss of the perfect snake that was just perfect and vet bills put me back $1000 plus and every time i see a female jungle carpet i want it so bad but havent been able to bring myself to get another one yet tho i want one so bad

Your first pick would be my first pick out of that litter too. I love those swirly whirls! That's too bad about #13... I hope it's eye gets better. Would be a shame if it passed away. If nothing else, only haveing one eye and living a healthy life would be ok too!

Yeah, I'm liking that one as well, pondering making it a holdback, I think it depends on sex, if it's a girl then holdback, if it's a boy then let go.

I've had a few over the years with minor birth defects. So far each was viable, eating etc. and I've been able to adopt them out at nominal prices (so they wouldn't be kingsnake food). For this only time will tell. Looking at it I suspect there is some deformity of the eye socket from the pressure. So most likely will be an adoption at best.

Thanks Tim, #13 is one of the realities of breeding, there will be a variety of babiesbabies! All the way from perfect little stunner on one end of the scale to a baby that has to be put down on the other end. I know some breeders that would have put 13 down at first sight, along with others I have adopted out.

IMO if it's healthy enough to live and grow without pain or extensive additional care, then it should be given the chance to live out it's life. Of course I recommend not to breed these individuals but they shoud make fine pets!!

Gotta agree with this sentiment. I have a bullsnake with only one eye and a stubby tail. But she is the sweetest thing and not hissy towards me. (her mom was the loudest hisser - must be a thing among those Texas bulls) She thrives and gets along just fine. I know at first I was thinking to cull her out, but my friend was set on keeping her and seeing how things went. Glad for that.

I love number 4. I can't believe how many medallions are squeezed onto it's little body!

My thoughts are with little 13. Fingers are crossed for the little guy or gal.

I'm actually really liking #11. If he's a male I may even be willing to take him off your hands since he is so far down on your list. His side medallions are so dark and filled in. Not quite an eclipse faze, but closer than any of the others.

Bob

rainbowsrus Sep 19, 2007 04:23 PM

Thanks Bob,

Duh, I see number two, one of my top three from the litter.

What about number eight are you liking? IMO looks like a very decent one, nice crescents and clean patterns with a hint of color in the near future.

I don't know now Dave cuz I was finished the better part of a daquiri at that time and maybe wasn't thinking right??? I think what caught my eye at the time was a dorsal color wanting to pop now I can't decide but I like smaller crescents near bulleyes but you got to like those tangerine crescents too. The daquiri was a strawberry colada if you wondering too

Great looking babys, looks like it was worth the wait!

I like when the lateral spots run together, looks like a
set of eyeballs. Hope you don't mind, I edited one of your pics
a bit. (It's been a long, stressful day here, so I'm doing mindless stuff now.)

Congrats on the litter.

Shoot, now that she's been tainted with graffiti, I guess she'll have to be culled. Actually, don't do that, I'll take her off your hands with the promise I won't breed her.

I agree, BRB's are great because the patterns are so variable.

I'm sure I can find something to clean her up enough to make her sellable. Wouldn't want to burden you with all that effort.

hyporainbowboas Sep 19, 2007 11:58 PM

Dave,

Congrats,,,,
I like #5 due to very uniform side markings.

Also, I had one female BRB born with the exact same problem on the same eye three years ago. Those could have been my picts they are so similar....

The swelling went down very quickly, NO VET, NO MEDS, and NO FREEZER. I have had her until a month ago. She never had any problems and I think she could see out of both eyes. I sold her last month to a nice girl who wanted a pet (NO BREEDING). She was gorgious, But I didn't want to breed her (although I am sure that it is not genetic).

Best wishes,

Congrats on the litter. Great looking bunch of babies. Do you think the one w/ the distended scales around the eye will eventually lose that condition?

reako45

rainbowsrus Sep 20, 2007 01:57 AM

Well, I though it looked like water under the eye scale and Bryan had a similar one that made it fine. Will have to wait and see.
