Feeding f/t

LibertyReptiles Sep 19, 2007 10:18 PM

For those of you that like to feed f/t...I've been experimenting with 30 hatchlings and have found that maybe they switch easier as youngsters. None have eaten more than 5 times before switching and several only ate 1-2 times before switching. It works with mice or rats...if they started on mice, then I switched them to frozen with mice and then on to rats later. The mouse to rat seems fairly easy at this stage also but I'm still compiling data on that. I'm by no means saying they will stay on frozen...but if you like to feed frozen, then you know whenever they will take it it's a plus.

I've seen the same results. I start all my babies on live rat pups and switch them to F/T within 3 to 5 feedings. There is always 1 or 2 the won't switch... but as a rule I believe it's a lot easier. Once there on F/T... new owners can keep them of F/T or switch them back to live.

Is it too difficult to start hatchlings on f/t, or do they really need that live movement and heat to take their first meal?

They still need the movement and heat even later on...the heat seems to be more important than movement. But at first they are just too nervous and bashful.

Very true and I have had some take F/T as a first meal, but not that common.

i have gotten the same results. I try all of them on f/t first because a few will eat f/t as their first meal. For those that wont I offer live hopper mice. Most will eat these. Then after one or two live meals i offer f/t each time. many will take them.those that dont keep getting live. then each time i feed i will try f/t first. most convert, but there are a few that wont. good luck Rin
