Coral Question

Paul Edwards May 22, 2003 09:14 AM

Hi,
I have a question regarding Coral albinos. To get true corals, do you have to breed coral to coral? If you breed a coral to a normal het albino (which I've seen done twice so far this year, one claiming the babies to be corals), will you end up with lesser quality corals, or extremely high quality "normal" albinos? I'll post a pic of an exceptional Coral I took at Pete Kahls place if I can figure it out. Thanks,
Paul Edwards

I have heard that occasionally very normal looking albino babies will grow up to be corals. I think this is where Chuck T's corals came from. he bought the albino as a normal from Kahl and it as it aged it developed the colors. There is no guarentee that the normal albinos from his litter won't tur in to corals also... so get the cheap ones.. hint hint

Chuck bought it as a coral albino. But CE is right, I dont think anyone has proven coral to be genetic. I have seen normal het/het breedings drop nice high pink corals. Just luck? I dunno. But they sure are damn nice looking.

So if there were corals in the pairing, it would make the most sense to buy the prettiest, most expensive ones you can. The odds of the normal albinos turning into spectacular corals are less than the obvious nicest ones I would think. So many people try to scrimp out when it comes to buying animals. It's usually a big mistake. The best of the best always sells. Example : your known for having awesome red tail boas right (your photography skills don't hurt at all BTW) ? I'll bet you have spent a lot of hard earned dollars, and a lot of energy contacting people, getting on waiting lists & so forth, to get the best animals money can buy. Do you think your going to have a problem selling your babies? Heck no ! Why ? Because people know your stock is the best !!!
That's how I feel about Coral albinos. I have seen the best, and nothing short of that will do for me !
I don't know how I got off on this rant, but hey, it's fun.

if you are looking for a coral then buy the best one you can find. I personally am not a big fan of morphs but still want to own an albino just for fun. When the choice comes of who to buy the albino from, if they are available I would go with Chuck's or any other litter that contained both normals and corals. Just rolling the dice and hoping it turns out to be something special. You are correct, there is no shortcut to buying the best... it takes alot of hard work to build a collection of nice boas... not to mention the cost. Thanks for the kind words BTW... Speak to Rob lately? I gotta give him a call..always an interesting convo.

Hope all is well
Charles

Well, maybe not everything. But... the next time you talk to him, you ask him whose collection he went to that totally blew his mind & got him started on the right track !!! He was keeping stuff in top opening cages back then, untill he came to visit - you know who !!! Jusy kidding, but I'd like to think I had at least a little influence on him. Never could understand his obsession with those Boa constrictors though, until now. Funny how that works sometimes; you spend all your life in something like arboreals, like I did, then you visit a great collection (for me it was Pete Kahls) & it's like your seeing things for the first time again. It opens up a whole new area of understanding. Now Boas are all I think about (herp wise). My visit to Pete's place( kinda like a sojourn to Mecca !) was very much like Robs visit to my collection way back when. It just totally blew me away. Our animals, our facilities, sometimes both if were lucky, can really influence those that are just getting into all of this. Very important to get people going in the right direction sometimes when they are new.
Robb goes fishing based on how his boas are coiled. Try to figure that one out !!! LOL

for bringing Rob in .. you know the chain can only be broken if the lead vampire is dispatched? lol .. I am not surprised about the fishing story.. I have been hoping to get a good picture of a funnel cloud to send to him... I know he would love to see that...

and by the way... welcome to boa sickness 101 .. enjoy your stay

from talking to Pete about it he said they 1st were random . But he bred coral to coral & got all corals . He states on his website that he believes it to be recessive because of that 100% . He also said that when breeding coral to coral the color intensifies in the offspring . My coral female was bred by a harlequin @ BCIbydesign & we hope to produce some of the best corals to date using the harley gene .

I have some great pics of Corals taken at Pete's place I'd like to post. They are on "my pictures", which is a part of "my documents", on my computer. They were taken with my Nikon digital, but I don't know how to post them on here from there - do you? Or anyone else? I thought they had to have an address. Thanks,
Paul

Paul I have the same problem . I know we have pics of the same animals but when I try to upload it tells me I need to delete something & there are only a few pics on my photo account & I've paid for extra space . Check back in a little while & I may have some . Those KILLER corals were from a coral to coral breeding .

JeffGray May 22, 2003 06:47 PM

Your's may be better Paul , but here it is ... FINALLY !

Paul Edwards May 22, 2003 07:21 PM

How did you do that? Was that off the Kingsnake Galleries? I don't have an acct there, I used to have my web designer post it to my site & then I'd get it off there, but we are getting a new domain name right now so it's not hosted. In short, you have to have an address to type in the box I think don't you?

You can start a "free account" from the K.S. Gallery,in VGA format,(640X480) it gives you roughly 17 pics before full...it's quick & easy...errr...it used to be,not sure if they changed it or not, give it a try...
