new blue tongue

scalesnshells Aug 21, 2003 06:00 PM

just got a new blue tongue, she is about 1.5 years, i am feeding her iams turkey and rice, its like 10 percent prot. and 6 percent fat. she was on 9 lives cat food....but i think iams will suit her better. she has a beautiful pinkish belly, she really looks beautiful, i would send a pic on here if i knew how!

i keep alot of lizards and reptiles...and i have read about blue tongues alot and still am, but i am just wondering if there is any important info on them that i should know that is different from most lizards...(like for uro's that they shouldnt have a water bowl...or something like that!)
thanks guys
kody

Your BTS will be happier and healthier long term if you start adding vegetables and fruit to his diet. Animal protien only is not a good diet.
Search this forum and the lizard forum archives for suggestions- there are several excellent BTS keepers who read and post here- but here are my thoughts:
50/50 animal protien/plant material for an adult BTS. Juvies and gravid females will appreciate a diet higher on the animal protien side.
Animal sources: low fat high quality dog food (wet), earthworms, crickets, meal worms, super worms, wax worms, silk worms, hissing cockroaches, cooked meats such as turkey, chicken & beef, cooked egg. Big treat is a pinky mouse.
Plants: Dark leafy greens (chard, kale, dandelion, watercress, mulberry, spinach, cabbage, mustard greens, carrot tops, radish tops ect.) Grated veggies (yam, sweet potatoe, broccoli, carrot, squash). Chopped fruit: tomatoe, banana, stone fruits, kiwi, mango, berries ect. Not more than around 10% fruit or you may cause diarrhea.
If you have yourself a dog/cat food junkie, it may take patience and much mixing to get your BTS to eat a more varied and healthy diet. A little hunger may help as well if you are feeding every day.
