I think of dinking as taking an unproven snake and trying to prove it out. It might be an "odd" looking normal with certain characteristics that make you think it is genetic. Some folks look at clear bellies, flames, patterns or other odd characteristics, in the hope of proving that it is genetic for that trait, be id co-dom, recessive or dominant.
I have a VERY dark ball(called melanistic by some) that has a clear belly with very strong borders along the ventral scales and dark eyes. He is my "dinking" project. I will breed him to a normal female and see if the offspring look like him. I will then hold back the females to raise up and breed him to(assuming some don't come out looking like him) in the hope it is recessive..you get the picture.
I just realized you may have just wanted a simple answer, if you did, I'm sorry for the long post. I don't feel like coding today...lol.

So its just a project not a morph? ive seen lots of Rows of normals and people could make themselves crazy trying to dink something together

Yep, it's all in the hope of proving something out. No guarantees, could end up with bunches of normals het for nothing at all. IF you do and people like it then you could be in a nice position though

Wow, that sounds IDENTICAL to a sub-adult female that I have (you said yours is: "a VERY dark ball(called melanistic by some) that has a clear belly with very strong borders along the ventral scales". My girl also has a reduced pattern with no spots on her sides. It'll be cool to see what the super form looks like if it turns out to be genetic.

Good Luck!

Its just something you're doing for fun.....with your fingers crossed.

This is a hobby, have fun! Don't think of it as "dinking yourself to death"

Dinking was coined so to speak by Ralph Davis....he initially used it as a term for "fooling around" or "experimenting" with an unknown/unproven morph.....Now everyone uses the phrase when they have an interesting or potentially new morph that they are working on proving out......

Im sure you have a dinking project or two as well......
