new cage...few questions!

bluestanger66 Sep 20, 2007 05:11 PM

i am again unsure of what to use for my crested gecko, i am getting an 18x18x18 cage today, and i want to know what kind of substrate is best. Right now, i have the exo terra forest bark, is that ok to use? it seems like every time i go to the store they recommend something different. also, i am using a night glow light, because my dorm room can get a little chilly, can i leave that on at all times? it is a 50 watt. the cage now stays between 72-76. thanks for all the advice! I have been mainly feeding my crestie baby food and crickets, is CGD better to go with? and what should i be dusting the crickets with? thanks for all the help, im just frustrated with the pet stores "guessing"

It can be frustrating when store employees give different advice... also remember that cresties where "extinct" then rediscovered so there are lots of different opinions.

If your crested is still young (less than 9 months) then I have had the best results with a combination of crickets and CGD. If the gecko has been previously raised on babyfood you will have to slowly mix CGD into the food in increasing amounts until you can get to full CGD. (Don't worry, these instructions are on the bottles of CGD.) (Purple top bottle)

As for crickets, gut load them with a commercial product, most are good, I prefer "Cricket Yummies" but I'm on an all natural bent right now. What was recommended to me to dust was actually "Leopard Gecko Cricket Dust" from the same company who makes CGD. I switched my leo over to it with little protest too. (Pink top bottle)

If you look down a few posts, I posted my favorite care sheet with all this info and more, I believe the title is "Care Sheet" unless it was removed.

Oh- I use papertowels as a substrate. We live near a creek and have a lot of mold problems, for us, they hold moisture well and are easy to clean out on a regular basis. Good luck.
