cyclonegirl Aug 21, 2003 06:12 PM

I am gitting 2Fbts in about a week. I know I should feed them crickets, but I've read about variety diets. I am pretty sure I can feed them mealworms, is that all? Can I feed them moths, worms?

Thanks in advance,
Cyclone Girl

Hello Cyclonegirl,
Gutloaded crickets should be the main diet. Other things you can add to your toads diets, are earthworms, moths, waxworms, etcetc. Pretty much, any soft bodied insect that hasn't been found in any pesticided areas.

Do not feed your toads mealworms, as there excoskeleton is very hard to digest, and can easily impact inside the frog. Aswell, with mealworms have been known on the odd occasion to eat through the frogs/toads stomach.

Some say its a myth, ... but I've heard/read by many people its been done to there frogs.

I feed mine mostly crickets, but I also feed them anything I can find outside. They don't care too much for ants, but they love spiders, earthworms, grasshoppers, and pillbugs.
I don't give any credibillity to the urban legend that mealworms will eat their way out of a toads stomach. The digestive acids will kill them before they could even think about escape. I do feed them to my animals, but not on a regular basis. They are great for an occasional treat, but too fatty for a staple food.

lab diet is entirely gut-loaded crickets, occaisionally coated w/calcium powder. crickets are fed dogfood coated w/vitamins & bone meal. my personal toads get gut-loaded crickets, grindal worms (mine are still very small), tubifex worms (in a dish), and the occasional mealworm and wax worm. i know the lab diet actually works pretty well, because my favorit lab toad died recently, and i discovered she was 22 years old!
