It's time......SECRET ANNOUNCED!!!!

rainbowsrus Sep 21, 2007 11:35 AM

Honestly, this has been fun and even though it's taken longer than I anticipated and have kept y'all hanging way longer than I ever intended. I think most of you have had fun as well. As I said in the beginning it was something big and it really is.

Drum roll please..........

My last chance for suspense.......

Can't just blurt it out...........

OK, here we go...........................

The secret is and the reason it's taken so much longer than anticipated was tied to my baby anerys from Brian Sharp.

Was that enough to trigger any light bulbs?

I have taken over the Calico Project from Brian Sharp. I've been waiting all this time for Brian to be able to ship not only my Anery babies but also THE Calico male.

I was actually surprised nobody guessed that, kept skirting around albino and other known morphs but nobody out and out guessed the Calico. Closest is got as I remember was Jasmine mentioned Calico in a private e-mail (was fishing for clues) but it was part of a list of morphs and not a specific guess.

There were even a couple of threads where the Calico project came up (one this week even) and I gave out details about the history. Duh, because I was totally up on it directly from Brian. You know it was hard for me to keep my mouth shut both of those times!!!!!!

He came in with the Anery's and OMG, when I opened the bag, he literally took my breath away. Brian's pics do him no justice. They don't even show the extent of whiting out in the tail area. These whited out areas are simply that, white. No scale damage, just the color has gone away.

LOL, he's already given me a little love bite, just opened his mouth and closed it on my arm, not tight, no strike, no constriction. More like a cat play biting. I think he's claimed me as his!

Want to see some pics? I took these the evening he arrived, sorry for the poorer quality, was in the Q-room without great lighting. Yes, even the Calico will be going through Quarantine.

LOL OMG I thought when you brought up the calico after I mentioned something about it that was the give away but you held fast.... That is one of the reasons I mentioned it, but you resisted my attempt to get it out of you....

Cant wait to see what this boy does, who are you using to pair him up with? Hypos?

Hey Jason, good try and I even reworded my response to lead away from knowing too much about it.

Yeah was hard to not just blurt it out and I was surprised soemwhat that nobody jumped on it and guessed Calico after that but then again, I had already posted this info before and I have dealt with Brian recently and in the past on the Anery project.

Actually, first pass will be to breed him to two of my finest normals. The intent being to produce stunning looking normal babies that are his descendents so would be carrying the Calico gene if it is in fact a recessive morph. I will be selling limited numbers of those babies, very limited!!! And raising up a good sized group for myself. Problem with Calico is it's not apparent at birth so will have to work it out!!!

Trust me I thought about asking it but 15K asking price and the fact that you had just purchases the anerys, lead me away. Hehe I would be breeding that boy to as many above avg females I had and that he could sire. Good luck and congrats!!! I cant wait to see some more pics of Cali the Calico BRB

rainbowsrus Sep 21, 2007 12:25 PM

hehe, I thought that might defer any questions.....worked!!!

There are a few ways to approach this project.

Breed like crazy and sell all I can right away:
Upside - would be selling lots of babies at moderate prices
Downside - if does prove out then have given away lots of babies at lower prices AND now have lots of competition. If does not prove out, then have sold lats of babies to lots of folks at an elevated price and they all loose out

Breed and keep all babies until morph is proven:
Upside, if it does prove, then all you sell would be at full morph prices AND you have the only source for several years.
Downside, if it does not prove, then you have a lot of normals to sell.

A blend of the two:

Limit breeding, produce and sell enough to keep a good breeding colony and sell some at moderate prices.

I think this is how I will proceed with the project.

Thanks Rob and think about this, even my pics do him NO justice. I meant it when I said he took my breath away. WOW!!!!!

I don't know about irridescence, have not had him in good light. Maybe an outdoor photo shoot is in order? I'm afraid full sunlight will wash out his calico areas so need a warm cloudy day. Also, I think I should avoid to much direct sunlight as he has no pigmentation to block the sun. Can snakes get sunburned? He's way to special to risk!!

You know, you have a good point there. Maybe some pictures on a cloudy day like you said or sunny day, but in the shade. Or, get a big white sheet that is kinda thin. Stretch it out right in the sun and get the pictures under it. Like a giant photo both.

I'm happy for you. I hope that this turns out great for you.

Sheesh Dave.... you just have to have everything now dont you? I was just talking with someone last night about if the secret might be the Calico. But I thought it might not be because I thought you said it wasn't going to be a BRB morph. I was hoping to snag that boy in a few years..... but I suppose someone had to get him before then..... of COURSE it was YOU!!

Congrats by the way, that boy is stunning! Puhleeeez put me on your list if you get babies from him!

Thanks Aubrey

LOL, all my comments were carefully worded to totally true but as misleading as possible. Wouldn't have been as much fun if I lead you guys/gals to the answer right away. And then it took soooo much longer than anticipated. First plan was to ship babies before Daytona but weather was not cooperating!!

Brian was at the point of starting the project back up if he did not sell. Can always sell his offspring at a higher price simply because it might be a genetic morph. A litter or two could easily bring in the asking price and Brian does have a couple of normal females just waiting to have a shot at him. So, in a couple of years you might have been able to get him but then again, maybe not.

And yes I want it all!!!!! Albino is next on the list, but I need to produce and sell some stuff before I can afford that!

Have not started a wait list, will only be selling a small qty and will require a down payment to be on that list.

Thanks Jasmine and yeah you were the closest but only by wondering aloud what it could have been and Phew, right after I had told you I'd tell you no more, don't ask.

from your email:

is the one you are going to buy something I already know about(albino, anery, hypo, ghost) or is it something else? Or maybe you got a hold of one of Tony Basica's long lost "gold-dust"s or a calico or the leucistic columbian I saw on his site.

Dave,
..Congratulations. I should have figured something out when Brian did not have the snake at Daytona. I also did not pick up on you the fact that you were waiting on anerythristics from him and that like the secret they arrived this week.
..I have always found it interesting that the white pattern on the back third of the body seems to follow the normal pattern lines up and down along the sides there for awhile.

Thanks Jeff,

Like I said there were so many pieces of the puzzle out there, just nobody had put them together.

He is one amazing animal, will be workign hard to see if I can produce more!!!!

Yeah, I noticed that too, it's like the dorsal patterns were removed for a goodly section. Towards the front half it still follows the dorsals quite a bit, just more speckled. I have noticed a few specks in the crescents as well. Look at my last two pics and you can see that most of the white spots are inside or on the dark border of the dorsal blotches

So I hijacked a computer in the library during one of my breaks to find out the secret. And i have to say I'm happy I did. Now that is one hell of a snake. Congrats and good luck with him. What are your plans for him?

Hey Tim, Thanks and don't go getting yourself in trouble.

Plans are to breed him to two of my top females, sell a limited number of pairs and maybe some single males at a price well above normal but also well under proven morph. Keep a very good breeding colony for myself and work towards making more in a few years!!! Once proven, the prices would surely climb!!

I bought the sucker, hence the dried up well!!!!!!

Thought long and hard on this purchase, It's an unproven morph. I may or may not be able to produce any more. Definitely a risk, but I decided I could sell of some offspring pairs with full disclosure as to history and by breeding him to my top end females, at least the risk for everyone would be minimized.

Worst case is it proves not genetic and those expensive offspring pairs turn out to be really nice normals at way higher than normal price.

Best case is it does prove genetic and I've sold some initial pairs for less than they are ultimately worth.

BTW, one person seeing the announcement has contacted me directly and has already started payments on a 1.1 pair of offspring!!!

Not really, wanna help come up with names?

I was referring to him as Spot, thought of Calvin.

My wife mentioned (and really really likes) Fluffy and I about died laughing.

Then went into some names for winter areas around Tahoe and Sierra but I've already used those on BCI and he desreves a unique name.

Also thought of Frosty.

So, what else can y'all think of?

That naming scheme is great, I was also wanting to do the same thing. Anyway you can't name him fluffy. cuz that is the sterotypical thing to name some monster example: harry potter, bob clark's retic, any snake. try Clorox

I like those names and the idea behind them. Most people do not even know that Portuguese is the official language of Brazil. My one not so serious idea for a name would be to call him Calico with emphasis on the "CO" at the end so that it sounds more like a Brazilian name. Many of my snakes are named for political and geological names from within their range in the wild.

it was either new pattern or calico once i seen the info and price and this and that about it lol i kinda figured it but was like hmm if i ask in forum he might go im not sayin yes and im not sayin no and that would kinda give it away. i must say tho when you did anounce it i got all tingly lol very very sweet looker. i wish you the best of luck on this one

TimS Sep 21, 2007 01:43 PM

i was right about the pattern morph cause not only does the calico change the color into white in ares but when doing so alters the pattern of the snake lol so i win lol and sorry i didnt get here sooner dave likei said i was gonna be busy and not make it to a comp when you let every1 know

also i seen that snake in person (unless there is another one around lol) at tinley back in 05 and didnt seem to have as much white on it but sure was smokin i was like holy sh!t is that thing a calico a pied a what lol.

rainbowsrus Sep 21, 2007 01:54 PM

I think Calico is like a fine wine, it improves with age!!!

I think that's one of those could read it either way. Calico does not alter the patternitself, just takes away all the color so you don't see the pattern. But since you can't see the pattern isn't it therefore altered?

I think if Dave has a female ghost big enough next year he should put one of his motley boys on her and that would be awesome like I don't understand why people don't have a snow boa on a motley het albino but if I was a big name breeder I would have to have a snow for the two homozygous pairs of recessive genes that they carry (did I just babble sorry fellas) and a real nice hypo harlequin oh yeah

I really enjoy this forum and all my online friends here. I've been to other forums even here on KS and like has been stated by so many, they all pale in comparison. This forum is awesome and the reason for it is all the folks who participate!!! Each one of us has in some way or another contributed to the success and warm homey atmosphere that is promoted here.

You yourself started a thread a few weeks back about becoming a professional breeder that met with mixed reviews, BUT nothing nasty. Most of us, myself included, gave out advice to ease into it and that you really might need to keep your "day job" for stability. atherisquamigera Sep 21, 2007 05:23 PM

wow, really I am glad I posted that here, I had no idea there was potential for people to be mean about that. I mean we all love snakes right, that's why we are here. oh and the update on the business: been running rough numbers and trying to figure out what kind of housing I can afford to give them, and trying to figure out how many snakes I need to support myself, etc. I looked at business plans, and realized that I could only answer about half of those questions, so now I am trying to find answers to all of the questions on the "make your own business plan" thing. I thought of a pretty good idea of how to sell the number of babies I need to sell, to make it. It's like kingnsnake, but made for pet keepers not breeders. Most people don't even know you can buy pets online, I was thinking of making it like an online (reptile) pet store, with a number of breeders offering different animals. I bought the url: buylivepets.com but I am still trying to work out the kinks in my idea. I am also working with my boyfriend to make an easy to use database for keeping track of the lineage of all my snakes, plus medical history etc.
So I haven't given up, just slowed down with my small paycheck. When I am done with the database, (it will probably be accessible online, just like the datdbase for our ISP) I will give you guys logins so you can try it out. =)

Exactly what we were trying to tell you, you can't just turn on a business like this. It has to be built. A huge part of it is getting the breeder stock up to age. Even if you had all the capital you needed to start it, it'd be 4 or 5 years before you could be producing in quantity. AND, even if you did that, the business name would not have grown that quickly so you might not be able to sell those quantities.

Look at me for example:

I've been breeding for years, have a good rep (at least I hope so) and still no way could I quit my day job and be a full time breeder (yet). Have a good website and a good following, have built a great collection of animals. Still not producing in quantities qty great enough to be positive cash flow. I am on the edge of turning that around though.

I didn't play the guessing game because I've known for a few months what Dave what up to. I guess you just had to tell someone.

You're right, your pictures show the extent of whitening much better.

Beautiful animal. I hope all goes well with your project. I predict that his genes are going to help take our beloved species to an even higher level of popularity.

LOL, didn't get a chance to look, I was in a hurry and he did not like that grass. He kept darting back and forth each time a blade touched his head. Plus, IMO he could use a nice damp hide box, hmmmm wonder where I could get one of those??

wow dave! nice on on keeping us in the dark the whole time. well played! and of course that is one beautiful BRB. if he proves out i would love to see a calico red hypo. like cross him with the creamsicle orange hypo's that bryan produces. that would be truly amazing. anyways good luck with him! very unique and special snake!

First pic was absolutely stunning Bruce. She could very well be a canidate for a mating so Dave may try and contact you and buy her from youlol His collection is wide and diverse in the BRB department that he is like a one stop shop so to speak and that is pretty nice you just have to get good with him so letting her go with definately get you a front row ticket haha lol fellas

The spots are on both sides of her, in various locations. None dorsally and none on the front half of her. I purchased her from a customer of mine about a year or so ago. No history other than that she was a "pet" and is about 4 years old. As far as a "front row seat" I guess I shoud be happy, sometimes they won't even let me in the door. LOL

go ahead and buy his t colombian project and clean him out.

I just got the one male calico, I have plenty of females and really working toward upgrading the entire breeder collection over time so no need to bring in anything but stunners.

I think I have more than enough on my plate for now!!!
