Meet Abraxas

Raveness_d Sep 21, 2007 03:15 PM

These two were taken last night, moments before he tried to eat my face.

I'm chalking it up to stress. I plan on letting him alone for about a week before I bother him again.

If he's still Strikey-Mc.Strikerson, do you guys have any tips? I've never had to deal with an ornery 5 ft snake before.

My favorite is putting a sock or a shirt or some piece of dirty laundry in there and let it stay there for a few weeks. get the smell of you in there. and I handle with gloves or at least socks on my hands until they get used to their new home. And I try to only handle them when they are in the open so that they can feel totally safe in their hide-box, it minimizes stress, i hope.

Pic looks like he may be in shed???? or could be lighting????

He looks good BTW!!

My Eve came in a bit nippy, key is not stressing them out and once out they are out of the cage, they should tame down. If allowed to cruise, don't "hold onto" him, rather give him support. If you are tentave, he could sense this and react. I've seen it with a recently sold male he was fine with me holding him right, letting him cruise around my upper body and only re-directing when necessary. The buyer wanted to hold onto him and force him to hold still, duh just made him more fidgety. Whatever you do DON'T put him away or down right after he does bite. That reinforces the "bite and escape" behavior.

His belly is pretty red, so it wouldn't surprise me if he's going into shed.

I handled him a bit while transferring him into his Q enclosure, and he was fine... except when the s/o walked by. That was his first strike. Missed, but surprised me a bit.

The second two were from his bin after I took the photos. I think he's just cranky.
What does a bite from an adult BRB feel like? I just want to be prepared. I've been bitten by a juvie, a garter, a dog, and many parrots... kinda want to know what to expect. lol

Thanks for the tips!

Danielle,
..When an adult BRB bites it is usually just a quick jab that is painless, kinda like getting a shot. Occasionally they will hang on and chew and constrict and it can be a little unpleasant.

Thanks Jeff. Today's feeding day, so we'll see how he's adapting, and hopefully a couple of days from now I'll be able to handle him.

I like the bright yellow crescents on him. And great name by the way... how did you come up with that?

His highliter yellow crescents caught my eye too.

Abraxas is a bit of an ambiguous word/name.

It has it's root in Greek numerology and was often carved on antique amulets alongside a figure of a creature that was half rooster, half snake. Basilisk, perhaps.
Aside from that, it has links to deities (especially the idea of a/the "supreme being" in Gnosticism) and demons both.

There's an entire encyclopedia entry on it here if you'd like to get in depth.

I'd just make sure to give him time to settle in. You might try leaving a dirty shirt of yours in the cage with him so he can get used to your smell.
