Fire Bellied Toads - Help

trvlbuny May 22, 2003 09:29 AM

1.) Is there a way to tell a male from a female? The people at the pet store are not very helpful. They just said if you get tadpoles and eggs you know. That doesn't help me much when I want that and I am not getting anything. 2.)One of my toads is was brown when I bought it and now it is starting to get green in some spots. What is it doing? Is this normal? and 3.)Do they eat anything other than crickets? Chrickets are cheap and all and that is good but I feel like they should have variety. I am new at this so can someone help?

Hi,

Fire-bellied toads change color for a few reasons. Its generally related to their diet and using a vitamin and mineral suppliment with color enhancers can help. They will also change a dark color when stressed for long periods of time. Almost all fb toads are wild caught and can come into pet stores pretty stresed out so its common for people to buy a brown toad that will change to a bright green. Some toads are also just naturally a dark black color and they never seem to lighten up. Other food items to offer besides crickets are wax worms, feeder guppies, ghost shrimp, black worms, earth worms and any other small soft bodied invertabrate. You can subsitute these food items instead of crickets every few feedings. Good luck!

i think some FBT can be brown from stress or the local. i have a FBT with some brown areas it "arm pit" area.

mainly the only way to see which is a guy or girl is to see whos mounting who.

crickets should be the main diet. worms are ok, moths, guppies (occasionally), waxworms, AVOID MEALWORMS
