need a few Q's Answered

well i know that this is not the quickest board that responds to things. but ne way here it goes,.

1. is this tank decent for 1 MHD. 2.5 feet tall, 3.2 feet wide, and 1.4 feet deep. These are off by some because i am measuring with a 1 foot plastic bendy ruler(couldn't find my tapemeasure)

2. i have a 10in. dome that has a 20 watt, Super UV Coil-Lamp in it it says, 20watts=75watts on a regular bulb so its really like a 75 watt light bulb. but it doesn't get hot at all. my first lizard (curly tail)(desert) (it died and it was really sad) needed a light bulb so it was supposed to be around 100 and i got a 60 watt bulb and it got it upto about 90. and i needed another. anyway. this bulb does not equal 75 watts cause i put the 60 watt in there and it got upto like 85 and i took it out and used this 1 and it barely gets upto 70. so what do i need to do. i have a smaller dome (5in.) would that make the temperature go up some. or if not whats a bulb i can get to make it get to like 75 degrees?

3. what are some plants that could be put into the cage(natural plants)(heard some ppl on this board saying they put them in there.)and i need a site where i can get a TALL branch to go in there(need 2)she has nothing incredilbly high to climb)

4. is it good for her to sit in water for long periods of time. cause my mom got this thing on sale called a ABORAL LAGOON here is what it looks like. http://www.pet-expo.com/cgi-bin/FULLPRES.exe?PARTNUM=ZMAL10&LARGEVIEW=ON
well i have some water sitting in it and when i put her up for the night she lays like her lower half and her tail in there for the entire night. is that ok for her?

Well, It has been slow through the summer but most posts get answered in a day or two at the most.

Optimal tank height is 3' but 2.5' would get you by.

This was really hard to follow, but simply put, they don't need a heat source. Is your house ever below 68œ? They do need a UVB light and that usually will put off enough light to boost the temps to 78œ and at night you want a drop to the upper 80's. Be sure to use a thermometer and if your daytime temps are less that 78 then start with a 25w bulb and increase if needed. It is better to err on the cool side than to get it to hot.

I have already posted this many times so I will refer you to my old post. You can read this answer at forum.kingsnake.com/mountain/messages/5770.html.

It is normal for them to sit in the water, but not dangle the tail. I would guess that the lagoon just happens to be infringing on her favorite perch. Maybe you could move it a bit. If she is actually sitting in it that is normal. I read your post above on the fat & lumpy question. Just before they lay the eggs the female may sit for hours in the water. Then she will start digging. If you do not provide a place for her to dig a nest she could have problems or she may pick a spot, lay the eggs, and then scatter them as she will try to bury them and in the process they will wind up all over the place. I have tried using a box with soil before and my females never seemed to figure out that they were supposed to use it as a nest and laid the eggs on the tank floor.

So, I really recommend that you put 4-5" of soil in the bottom of the whole tank. This will allow her to pick her nesting site. I wouldn't mess with any "soil". Instead, if you can't get a brick of coir fiber, bed-a-beast or equivelant, use moistened peat moss or worm bedding. If you use worm bedding make sure it isn't the recycled paper stuff.

Last, if you haven't had her to a vet, make sure you have her checked for parasites. If she is gravid I wouldn't take her in but you should take in one of her poos and have it checked. If she is gravid and carrying parasites chances are real good that she will die.

The site Joe was directing you to is www.froggieb.com/MHDCaresheet.html or you can find it in the kingsnake caresheets.

Good luck,

Marcia

i have had her for about 3 months. shes fine. i was jus wondering bout her sleeping in thw water. you would think it would get cold sleeping in it all night and also what does it mean if she has 1 eye open and the other closed. she does this sometimes. i got her from petsmart then took her to the vet 3 days after i had her. she is doin fine. what bout eating fish. do i jus put the fish in her water bowl or in a seperate bowl so the fish won't contaminate it.

I'm glad to hear you had her vet checked. That is so important. I would think that if she is comfortable with her tail in the water I wouldn't worry. If you notice the tip of her tail beginning to look odd you may want to be concerned.

The 1 eye open 1 shut is a normal thing with these guys. I don't know if they're "half-sleeping" (lol) of just cautious. It is very common to find them lounging on a branch looking very much asleep and then you notice this eye following your! I think it is a comfortable relaxed state for them but they keep an eye out for any possible threat.

As for the fish, the jury is still out on that one. I know someone had a betta that jumped from it's container in the fountain setup and was eaten by the dragon. I personally have never seen one of my dragons eating fish. I did buy some breeder guppies to try it out but they didn't seem to be interested in them. I have opted not to give it a try as I am concerned with keeping the water clean enough for the dragons to drink.

I read your next post about the nails. It is possible to clip the tips of the claws. Just make sure that if you do it you are careful to not get too close to the quick. Just like cats, dogs, and bird they will bleed a lot if you cut too deep. Also, these guys use there very sharp claws to climb so I wouldn't want to blunt them too much. I know I walk away from a cleaning or medicating session scratched all to heck. I clean my arms with peroxide when I'm done or I itch for days. If I remember to peroxide the scratches they seem to be gone in a day or two and don't leave a scar. I just pour a little in my palms and rub it on like lotion, wait a few seconds, and rinse.

I think part of the thing with the scratches is a matter of time and comfort. As your dragon gets more used to you and your routines it will become more relaxed and you won't walk away with as many scratches. I have one wild pair that are almost unmanageable but most of my dragons are easily handled.
