Picture of Baby dragon and the sand flushed from his stomach

CheriS Aug 21, 2003 08:03 PM

These are not my pictures or dragon, but i have seen several people requesting them and I have them.

The sand enlarges when ingested and reacting to enzynes, bile salts and digestive juices in the digestive tract, this is the baby they were flushed out of and the sand removed.

Man that sure is a lot of sand. Is that the calci junk or the repti stuff? I seen one pic last year it was the pic of the stuff in a ball of slime that got removed from the dragon. Real nasty stuff. I stay away from sand or any partical substrate that can be swallowed. Cheri I saw your setups very nice. Good idea. I'm just scared to death of the stuff. I tried it one day when I first got into beardies. Yes, one day. he was licking it the first day. Plus it is just a pain in the neck to clean.

i think that idea for the enclosures is also a great idea, i just finished cleaning all my enclosures, i think im gonna go that route, just have to make the boxes already have hammocks, my guys love them, carrick is always sitting his fat body in his.

the only thing you have to worry about and not just babies, but adults too, Vet and assistants say most surgeries to remove an impaction from lizards is in adults and sand.

There is also a problem when it is very dry with sand particles being breathed in. This is another main reason we changed our husbandry with the dragons and limit their area to just a sand box and the remainder of the tank carpet or carpet and paper towels.

Some people keeping reptiles on sand had respiratory problems and xrays of bearded dragon lungs show tiny dark spots much in a like butterfly pattern on the lungs, pathology after death showed it was fine dust silica sand particles

On this particular one I am not sure.

But there are dual small tubes with pumps I have seen used, the tube is inserting down the throat into the stomach. one pumps in saline and the other pumps out the sand and water.

If the impaction is low in the digestive tract(intestines), an enema is used along with meds to make them poo. Usually first they try med to cause them to get the runs plus vaseline, repeated in four days. If that fails they need surgery.

god, that would be awful to watch a child go through, much less a tiny little beardie!

uhoh, now it sounds like im more touched by beardies than kids
