Minute insects in tank

Alanna Sep 23, 2007 04:58 PM

Lately i have seen on 2 occassions very small minute insects in my Leo's tank.(As small as a piece of dust) What are these and are they harmfull to her? I regularly clean her tank and always remove her pooh. Her appetite is still as strong as ever but i am concerned about these little guys in there. My tank is at the window so could these insects be from outside or is there something more sinister going on in my tank. I use tile for subtrate and i have a collection of wood and plastic ornaments in there.

could be mites ? what colour are these bugs ? does it move ?
mites are not good for a leo at all.. theres stuff you can buy to get rid of them ..
if it is mites .. or it could be possibly cricket poop ? lol thats a random one though

TAKE YOUR GECKO OUT IMMEDIATELY! These bugs will eat her ALIVE! I've had similar things happen with my Hermit Crab. They could be breeding in the cage or they are from outside. Make sure that they are completely out before your gecko goes in again.

Yes they move. I have only ever seen 2 of them though. Very very small and look black

I don´t know if they are going to eat your gecko alive... but..
I would advise to take your gecko out and clean his/her cage thoroughly with a 5% bleach solution. Just to make sure...
I´ve had the same problem once..... and those nasty creatures came inside the sphagnum moss(peat moss) bag.
Since then I always boil my peat moss for ten minutes prior to using it.

You also said your tank was in a window..

Do you have blinds or something? Sun Glass don't mix well.

Its on my desk beside the window. What do you mean by ''sun glass dont mix that well?. Also do you think i should throw out the wood ornaments i have in there and replace them or is that to extreme. I'm no to concerened of the cost as i have lost a Leo before and i aint going through that again

ginebig Sep 24, 2007 01:29 PM

''sun glass dont mix that well."

I think he was refering to the fact that when the sun shines through the glass it tends to make the inside of the tank much warmer than necessary. This could prove fatal to your Leo.

You can put your wooden peaces in the oven or boil them...
You should always disinfect every ornament that will be placed in your terrarium.

I live in Ireland so the hottest the tank has ever gotten to is 92F. No chance of a heatwave here im afraid

ginebig Sep 25, 2007 08:05 AM

LOL, OK you've got a point there . It's just a concern one should be aware of.

I also found tiny bugs in my mealworm breeding bin. They are light brown. I live in Southern California, what are they are they not good to have in with the mealworms? There is a lor of them. I don't know how to get rid of them since they are so small, and I don't want to start my mealworms all over again...it takes too long to get the cycle started again.
