filtration question

JKC Sep 23, 2007 06:13 PM

I just got a 150 gallon aquarium for two yearling American alligators to spend the winter in indoors. I'm looking for advice on what type of filter would work best. Any suggestions?

We have a similar scenario and we like the external cannister filters that filter dirty water through one hose and then provide filtered water through another and everything is outside of the tank. Our water stays crystal clear. You can also use a submersible filter that is self contained such as a Fluval and they work pretty good too. For a 150 gallon tank you'll want at least a couple of Fluval 4's.

though the water stays clear rest assured its not clean unless changed frequently. All the filtration system does is remove detritus giving the clean appearance...TC

Tom, I'm glad you added that comment; very, very important. I was out of town and didn't get a chance to add that like Tom said, bringing fresh water into the enclosure is vitally important. We are constantly doing partial and even full water changes at regular intervals with those cages that have filters as it is of utmost importance.

I use a carbon filtration set up for my larger turtle tanks which seems to work well. Where did you buy your tank if you dont mind me asking? I've been looking for one of that size and not many places carry them

A friend of mine had two of them buried in his garage and had not used them for years. I helped clean the garage and find them and he gave them to me. They were pretty dirty and dusty but cleaned up good. I found one to be a leaker but I'm not complaining.
