Ap Cages and Durability

xrayeric1993 Sep 24, 2007 08:05 PM

I'm looking for a few new cages and was thinking about AP plastics. I like that I can get glass fronts instead of the acrylic that scratches. My question is about the cages leaking between the joints of the floor and side panels. Do Ap cages leak urine between the joints after they are in use for awhile , do the screws strip easily, and do they hold up over time? Any other comments on their performance is appreciated.

Having used, and currently using, many different cage companies; Neodesha, Boaphile, Proline, BARRs, and Animal Plastics, I can say that my favorite are AP.

The strength and durability of an AP can not be beat. Unless they changed over to 1/2" HDPE (though that would create sealing issues with modular designs).

Much stronger than any of the other above companies, and in my opinion the white sliding glass cages look the nicest as well (provided they are kept spotless).

The panels are slotted by a CNC router and fit perfectly, then are screwed together. You then use a silicone based sealant to seal the seems. That's how aquariums are sealed. But with aquariums it is just glass with silicone, the AP plastic overlaps and fits together then it is sealed with silicone. I'm sure using a substrate like aspen and keeping large boids in them it would be best to re-seal them maybe once a year. I got mine this summer so I haven't had it in use long enough to know. The key is to seal it properly and you're set!

I am looking at this company as well because so many people on these forums give them high marks in everything from customer service and support as well as a great product. The post did bring up something I never even thought about, sealant I just assumed that they would ship a sealant with the product or do they? Hopefully they recommend one I really didn't want to do research on a sealant that can handle extreme temps and humidity and not be harmful to reptiles. Any good posts hope to read more responses.

They do ship sealant with the cage.

Just a standard silicone based stuff, similar if not exactly the same as used for fish tanks. If it is safe for fish odds are it is safe for reptiles (just a little rule to go by).
