Tame African Rock Pythons

Wayne Karau Sep 24, 2007 10:10 PM

Hello, just wondering who has or has had a truly captive bred tame Rock or Lesser Rock Python. I have had a Rock before and I don't intend to keep another but they are my favorite species of snake anyway. Show pictures if you can, especially if they are large. On a different note, someday soon I hope to get an Angolan. What do Angolan owners have to say about these beautiful snakes? Are they worth the $1500 to $2000 per animal? Thanks, Wayne.

I had an african rock (P. sebae) in my collection in the 1980's that was as "tame" as most burmese. I have also seen several more in other collections as well. They are around, it just may take a little work to locate them.

I have a 6foot yearling that I would consider "dog tame". He has NEVER even offered to bite and the most he has ever done is hissed....and that was one time. Ive taken him to my son's 1st grade class and let all of the children handle him. He was just as well behaved as my cornsnakes. What is funny is I told myself I would never keep an African Rock because of their reputations, but so far it has been one of the best snakes I've ever had. But I do consider him an exception to the rule, and I handle him on a daily basis, at least for a couple of minutes.

Captive rocks are good. Import baby burms are just as "mean." Rocks are actually less capable than burms when it comes to how they can strike and they can't throw themselves at you like a retic. They always calm down when they're older, and over 10 feet (and fat.)

Anyone out there with some weird rock morphs? I've heard there are axanthics and t albinos.

I've had one tame one years ago. Seems like the lighter the color, the better the temperment. And for some reason, they always went for the face when striking.

They always get calm as they get older? Mine must have been an oddity for sure. My 14ft male, back in 96 could and would strike across an 8ft cage like a rattlesnake. he would never calm down for anything. I ended up getting rid of him as I was not prepared for an animal like him at that time even though I do miss him at times now and plan on getting one in the future.

Angolans are great pet snakes. They don't get too big. Husbandry is super easy. Breeding isnt' tough (even though I haven't had luck with that just yet). They do resemble ball pythons in shape but get bigger .

Are they worth the $'s? That really is something that each keeper has to ask himself. I've got more information on my website if you're interested.
