tsusnakeguy Sep 24, 2007 10:22 PM

I was wondering if anyone has pictures of their outdoor pens/yards for their larger tortoises? I would love to hear how you did it and see pictures of it. Thank you

15ftX17ft, post cemented in the ground, access gate, lattice so we could grow vines. We are attaching a rubbermaid shed on the outside for the winter months which will be heated.

looks great! does he leave the lattice alone? mine would probably try to go through the holes, as he seems to have no idea what he can or can't fit into or through...

thanks for the compliment . I started by collecting misc. glass, mostly double payne insulated glass. then I found some tempered glass at the dump and used it for the roof. I welded a frame that supports the glass roof and put it on hinges so I can open the entire roof if it gets to hot. I put a storm door on one side and a window on the other so I can get cross ventilation on warm days. I used old pieces of plastic culvert and made tunnels under the walls, I cut a slot in each and can slide a metal plate through it to keep the torts in side a t night or when it is cold. I have a pool on the inside as well as the out side. made of concrete with a drain in the bottom. I planted lots of african grasses and I grow opuntia cactus and hybiscus right inside the green house. it all work very easily and after the intial work of building everything it is very low maintanance. we even have a couple of local frogs that we put in and they eat the spiders and flies that get trapped in the green house. my next venture will be a winter house but that will be a bit trickier for I live in new england!!!! I have extended the season about 90 days outside. I can keep them out for another week or two then I'll be bringing them back in. but they can go out in april again.

what a great setup! i'd absolutely love to have something like that for my redfoot, but first i'd have to move to someplace with a yard (i'm in an apartment)... i've been having brainstorms about my porch, though!
