Stop using the word venom. You can dissect a hognose every direction you want to and there is no venom gland in this snake. It is just spit, same as you or me. If I bite you, you might be alergic to me and die too. So please everyone, don't fall into the trap of even using the word venom when we are talking about saliva. Please delete the word "Venom" from your vocabulary or one day the man will come an take your snakes away. Thanks - Tom

I agree. However, I don't know if it has properties of neurotoxins or neurotoxins in it. Could someone verify that? i am curious about it.

From some of the toads I have seen I would somewhat guess both...it immobilizes them allowing the toad to be swallowed but if you have ever seen one after a hog gets scared and regurgiatates...that thing is really soupy, indicating haematoxic. I could be wrong though. Andy

You may be right but Ive seen regurge from some snakes and it looks pretty soupy as well. Im thinking that all snakes have saliva that aids in the digestion process in a more active manner than human saliva or many other species. Of course, I could be wrong also. Later, EP

Venom is just modified saliva anyway. And correct me if I am wrong, but don't they at least have a rudimentary duvenroys gland? Andy

At the paper BGF published. I gathered that he thinks it should be called venom. Unfortunately the concept that there is such thing as a weak venom is too complex for lawmakers.

Tom, please do not spread ignorance.

I realize you may feel this as a touchy subject, venom is venom. Though we may think of it as mild venom, just because it can’t kill you outright doesn’t mean its not there.

And like most coloubrids Heterodon have a Duvernoys gland.

When the gun grabbers got are guns because we put a cool looking stocks on them and they called them an assault rifle be cause we used there word in our on argument and they basically
won .
Look i have saliva glands ,Heterodon as Duvernoys gland both aid in digestion. Look im not looking for an argument . In the eyes of the public the word venom means something different.
look at the tone of all the post below. Im am not trying to be ignorant, i just don’t want to be known as the guy on the block or the guy who brings venomous snakes to school to show your
kids how cool snakes can be. Please don’t pick this thing apart see my point for what it.

Thanks, tom

I have no idea what that first sentence is even supposed to mean. As for the venom I am no expert but until someone is fatally wounded by one of these snakes you should take a step back. I happen to have a hog that does bite,(not SFEs either). She has bitten both myself and my girlfriend and shockingly we are both still alive. She is coming around though. The snake not my girlfriend.
