those pesky fruit flies.....

jon101 Sep 25, 2007 10:51 AM

having recently moved from nor cal to southern az, i have fruit flies now and again in my snake cages (never had them in nor cal). i keep the cages very clean and all snakes are doing fine but i still have some pesky fruit flies in some cages. any feces or wet spots seem to attract those pests. was thinking of hanging no pest strip in room or hot shot strip but wonder how the fumes would effect snakes. any suggestions or comments on using pest strips, etc?? thanx/jon

Honestly, I wouldn't resort to chemical means for flies that do nothing to harm your animals. No-Pest strips come with their risks if not used properly, but hanging them in a well-ventilated room probably wouldn't harm your herps. I haven't used them myself, but others here, like Kelly, can advise you.

If the flies are really bugging you, buy a few carnivorous plants that are recommended for fruit fly extermination, like sundews (Drosera) and butterworts (Pinguicula). Not only do you avoid using nasty pesticides (which aren't good for you in the long run, either, if you're constantly being exposed), you can keep some cool carnivorous plants.

Biological pest control is the way to go

I heard another way to reduce fruit fly numbers is to leave a candle lit (in a safe manner) over night. The light/heat draws them in and they collect in the hot wax.
