HAS ANYONE SEEN THIS BEFORE?!?! PLEASE RESPOND!! **PIC**

Charlotte Aug 21, 2003 09:23 PM

Ok--
went to go check on all my snakes (my ridleyi being my FAVORITE) and noticed this WIERD spot in my male ridleyi's eye... it's in his left eye, only. It almost looks the way a blind dog's eye would look. It's just a small cloudy spot and it's got me EXTREMELY worried...
They're really crappy pics and blurry, but it's hard to get a good crisp pic when this upclose... but you can clearly see the spot I'm refering to.

If anyone has any info on what this might be (or knows anyone who might could help me out) PLEASE let me know...
Thanks in advance...

~An extremely worried Mom~

I just wondered if it appears to be on the surface like maybe a scratch or does it look to be under the surface level and actually in the eye. Randy W.

Could it be a retained eyecap?
Gorgeous snake, BTW.

How old is the snake?

My male Gonyosoma appears to be completely blind now, he's 16 years old, appears to be similar to the aging effect seen in many elderly animals. Have also heard reports of issues of cataracts when using UV with snakes.

I will post a picture of my Gony tomorrow.

Unlikely that your snake has anything like this but may be of use to others. I know a few people with elderly rat snakes which have gone this way.

He is just over sixteen years, can't see but still feeding well.

I thought about that but I checked the skin that he shed and both eyecaps were on there...

I suppose this is possible, but I've never heard of it happening: Maybe the next layer of skin was pulled up just a bit with the last shed, much like peeling a sunburn can do.
It just sounds odd that suddenly after a shed, there's a weird light spot. Something's going on there. The eyecap seems most obvious.
Just a thought.

It looks very like a spot in my black rat's eye. When I posted no one really could help. Other than a couple of folks telling me they had had snakes have the same thing. I know it isn't a retained eyecap as all of her last 3 or 4 sheds have been clear and this just appeared in the last few months. And she is only 3yo. I don't know how it affects her vision as she is cranky all the time....so hard to say.
