electrical questions part 2: timers and power strips

somegirl Aug 21, 2003 09:40 PM

running 6 times (2 cages x 1 day 1 night 1 uvb) from one power outlet is a wee bit difficult...is it possible to put a power strip on the timer (wall then timer then strip then lights), or would this overload the outlet and be a fire hazard? any other ideas?
(i use the night bulb because we tend to turn the a/c up quite high at night, althoguh i guess its not realllllly necessary. but even 4 timers, just being as bulky as they are, is a pain)

buy a heavy duty timer, some of those have a place for a few plugs, i have mine plugged into a heavy duty extension cord then to the timer then to the power strip then to the wall, seems to work just fine... no expert here.. im just hoping i dont burn the place down! jk..

should be fine with the overheating.. lot of times the heavy duty power strips will have a built in fuse that will "blow" if it gets too hot.. that or the circuit breaker on the house should blow too... i do that all the time with our downstairs circuit.. i had to run an extension cord out the hallway to use a different circuit because i kept blowing the circuit where our reptile room is lol.

yeah, i just was trying to avoid the 30 dollar power strips and such.
of course, this is what i get for allowing myself to keep thinking reptiles are cheap the strip is still cheaper than what my roommate will charge me for burning his house down..every socket in my room has a power strip plugged in
