Help, sick geckos

mill1295 Sep 26, 2007 07:33 AM

I have three sick geckos. I took them to the vet once (the exotic guy in town) and treated them for parasites which he found in the fecal sample but they don't seem to have gotten any better. They are not eating still (they're not impacted since they're on paper towel). The one that is the worst off is lethargic and seems to maybe have eye problems? He doesn't open them much and they look like they might have some discharge. I gut load and dust the crickets and doubt it is environmental since I have three other leopards that are doing fine in other cages. I was just wondering if anyone had experienced this before or had any ideas about what could be wrong. If its treatable I'll take them back to the vet in a second but I don't want to spend another $200 and have them just die anyways.

How underweight are they? And how long ago did they see the vet? What did you use to treat the parasites? What kind of parasites?

They saw the vet a month ago. One is very underweight, another is a little better and the third is even a little better off. They were treated for pinworms with panacur. One treatment evey two weeks for three treatments. They were also treated for giardia with medicine I can't remember the name of because the vet says they will all pretty much have that. They are going back to the vet tomorrow at 4:30. I would still be very greatful for any suggestions about what could be going on if anyone has run into something like this before. Two of them are babies I hatched and I really don't want to lose them, but in my experience vets (even 'exotic' vets!) usually aren't very helpful. ;/

Hey, I'm with you there. I've managed to find a practice not too far with several exotic vets, but I always try to get second opinions as well. It really could be one or more of several things. They may still have pinworms, some other type of worms, trichomoniasis (spelling?), giardia, etc. It sounds like it is a GI (Stomach) problem, so I'd get the vet to do repeat fecals on all of them. They are not eating at all? No interest in food? Have you been syringe feeding them something else to try to keep their weight on? How old are these leos? I've found in my own experience that once leos get past a certain body condition they don't survive the meds required to get them better. Can you see bones? The eye problem may just be linked to general malnutrition from not eating, or it may be from a skin problem, a vit A deficiency, or a bacterial infection. If there is discharge, I would get the vet to swab and culture it to see if they can determine if it's bacterial, and if so, what kind.
