Snake With Kinks

shaynablizard Sep 26, 2007 09:05 AM

I was given a Blue Beauty that has a few very noticeable kinks, however they don't seem to cause problems with her moving around, eating, etc. I'm not aware of anyone raising a snake with kinks to an adult. Does anyone know if there are any long term problems associated with kinks or is it more of a cosmetic defect?

as far as i know...kinks are mostly cosmetic...

from what i have read and seen, i think kinks have something to do with the incubation of eggs?

i wouldn't worry too much about the kinks, just watch the snake & be gentle with handling...

i've seen boas with kinks that do just fine, even breed normally...

I hatched a baby everglades rat that was so kinked it couldn't crawl. I called it "corkscrew" and kept it, mostly out of pity. I had it for about 8 years. After it reached about 1/2 size, the kinks were barely noticeable lumps on the backbone and by the time it was an adult, you really had to look close to notice anything out of the ordinary. He fathered children successfully and none of the offspring had any sort of deformation at all.

I finally gave it to another guy who wanted it for a nature center display.

Have had several over the years with various kinks, oddly all right at the vent. Each one has more or less corrected itself over time. Each was sold at a discount as a pet only. Had one this year the was completely folded up and over at the vent and flattened out. Was staying that way as I pulled it out of the goo. When I checked later, there is a noticeable bulge in the vent area but no kink. I think it just got "stuck" that way in the egg sack / oviduct and then grew that way. Could even be that the bones are still pliable and self correcting if allowed to.

I have one with a pretty bad kink in the tail, past the vent. I have had her since she was a baby. Got her 5 years ago. Only problem with her is that she often doesn't shed properly at that point, and I have to help. I only really think about the kink (which is still very noticable when you look) at shed time.
