Isn't this a 'family' emergency, so you can leave work early??????

Congrats, and post pics - as this is one of the litters I have been waiting for!

Works for me, fortunately I live only a couple of miles from work so is easy to slip home for such emergencys!!!!

One litter I've been waiting for as well. I always thought it made sense that Wilma was Daisey's mom, that's why I named her Wilma and the other female Betty. Now that I see the babies, clearly there are some stunners in there!!!!!! I do mean stunners!!!!!

Will work on pics tonight!!!!!

You were suppossed to keep that you feel Wilma is Daisey's mother a secret...especially since I am not real high on your list!

Looking forward to seeing some pics!

I love finding the lil slimers. Funny thing was one lil one was already jammin, had slithered through the moss and cleaned itself off and was out of the tub exploring the huge wide world. OK, not that huge, only one cage section. The rest were still chillin in their sacks. Several (like half) had not even pipped yet.

By mom's position, half in and half out of the tub it was clear she had gone in back in after giving birth. I strongly suspect she made a meal out of whatever slugs there were.

Dumb ? for you Dave that I should have put in my other post. When the female gives birth and the snakes are in their sacs, how long do you let them stay in there or do you put a little slit it in. I was always under the impression that you just let them be and absorbs everything right or wrong
Bob

rainbowsrus Sep 26, 2007 04:08 PM

Depends on the litter.

For those I've had this year, full term babies with no noticeable yolk at all, I'll pop the sack, real easy, just pinch a bit and pull, pops right open.

If there's any yolk at all, I just leave them be to absorb it on their own and check back every now and then. I move mom to a seperate cage so they can hang out in the same cage they were born in until they are ready to go out on their own.

Wilma dropped her litter today, not a huge one but WOW, there are some lookers in there. Will post up pics tonight. For now you'll have to settle for stats.

Wilma last pre birth weight 08/19 = 3057 grams
Post birth weight = 2513 grams (I think she had already scarfed down all the slugs)

15 babies, all full term, no yolk, ready to go babies

5 - 30 grams
4 - 31 grams
6 - 32 grams

Litter born at 133 days after POS.

Mike may have something with the dates and my "lower" temps having their own range. That might be why there has always been such variety, looks like temps really plays into gestational times. My dates were....

120 - Petunia, slugs and preemies, no viable babies
129 - Betty, decent litter, all full term babies
135 - Bullseye, huge liter, all full term babies
133 - Wilma, decent litter, all full term babies

Savannah - smallish litter due, now at 131 days
Clover - looks like a decent litter, now at 124 days
Boo - looks like another decent litter, now at 101 days

Pic of Mom on 08/31...

Congratulations and you always thought it was Wilma that was Daisy's mom so congrats on that, also on the litter and best of luck of getting Wilma back next year in the breeding program although did they go last year for Howard? What daytime highs and night time lows are you and Mike running? Oh yeah I hope Savannah quits pulling your leg cuz I think she is gonna get with Mickey next year Oh yeah I want in
Bob

rainbowsrus Sep 26, 2007 04:14 PM

Thanks Bob!!

For just having a litter Wilma looks great and should be no trouble getting her back into shape for next year. Howard was going every other year alternating the females. but had a dismal year last year, only a few babies. With proper feeding the females should IMO be able to go several years in a row, depends on litter size, dates and MOSTLY on individual. I'll evaluate each one seperately come breeding time but do not anticipate needing to hold her back.

Beep, wrong answer......I'm thinking both Savannah and Daisey will be tag teaming Fluffy next year (the Calico)!!
