Almost like herpin'

DAVO Aug 21, 2003 09:52 PM

Well like I said I kinda went herpin', went to the IRBA show in Pomona. Believe it or not it was almost equal with the last one. There was all kinda herpers searching high and low for that special snake or frog. Sure seems like there's a trend headed towards frogs. You could barely look at some of them there where so many looky lous. I did manage to purchase a couple of dart frogs and a pixie frog. Oh yes, I had to get a scorpion, I usely just catch my own but it was an Androctonus, just had to have it. What the hell getting some cool animals and didn't have to travel halfway around the world. Dave.

Dave,

Just thought I'd harass you a bit. Actually, my own personal definition of herps (literal translation = "things that crawl" actually includes all creepy crawlies (i.e., tarantulas, scorps, amblypigids, and insects), however most people don't see it that way. The popular definition for herps includes only the amphibians and reptiles.

I didn't make it to the show. How many vendors were there? See anything else unusual?

How are those grayband eggs looking? I'm just waiting for my rosys to drop. I've got gravid San Felipes, Catavinas, and San Ignacios. Any day now.

Take it easy.

Hey Mike, You know I couldn't tell ya off hand but I would guess there were about 30 venders at the show. I'm concerned about my eggs, they look a little shriveled. I know to mist them but I'm afraid it won't help. I mist them about every third to fourth day, I just don't want them to mold. The one bad egg I cut away and that seemed to keep the air in the incubater, it was starting to smell very bad. Even though I mist the eggs directly they just don't plump back up again. Oh yeah I went road cruising last night in the Anza area. Didn't see must just a couple tarantulas, probably to cold, plus the ground was still damp from the rains the other day. Don't you live in the upper desert? Maybe we could hook up sometime. Let me know. Dave

Thanks for the info. on the show. I was just curious. Although, I can't see your eggs directly, I've had eggs that look totally deflated and shriveled hatch. Also, I am suprized that you are misting them directly. I never did that and remember being told not to. I would keep a small cup of water in the container with them and keep the eggs sort of covered with a paper towel to absorb excess moisture that may form on the outside of the egg. Again, I also never removed bad eggs for fear of damaging the good ones that were attached to them and never had any problems. Although I have been generally successful with incubation of my eggs (graybands, ball pythons, tortoises, etc.), I really appreciate the live-bearers much more. They do all the work for you!

Sorry to hear of your general lack of good luck down around Anza. With the exception of my trip to Belize and Guatemala, and various surveys at work, I haven't done much herping this year. I've been too busy with the new kid and all. No complaints though, I've had some great experiences with both the kid and the herping I've been fortunate enough to do. On my trip to Central America, I caught and saw all kinds of cool stuff. Highlights included fer-de-lance, clouded snail sucker, red-backed coffee snake, red-earth centepede snake, Schmidt's 5-striped snake (which envonomated me!), Morellet's crocs, all kinds of geckos, frogs, toads, hundreds of red-rumped tarantulas including females with hatching egg sacks, 100's of babies), pink toes, and lots of tailess whip scorpions.

No, I do not live in the high desert, although I work up there quite often. I'm in the Redlands area. I would like to get out with you one of these days, however finding time to do so is difficult. You should try to make it to the Sept. meeting.

Mike
