Looking for Prospects

Serpents_Touch Sep 26, 2007 06:35 PM

I'm looking for something more rear-fanged and less dangerous. Preferrably one typically known to be easily handled with gloves, not hooks. I've seen too many horror stories from mere "nicks" from copperheads.

I would like to clarify myself, to avoid any misunderstanding.
I currently own a leucistic TR, I have owned: eastern garters, rough green snakes, corns, & BP's. I don't want any of the before mentioned snakes, except for a leuc. TR. BP's are too common, and the more visually appealing are too expensive. All Corns are too common, Kings as well. Rough greens are nice, but too small. Garters I can catch anywhere, and are too small as well. Hognose are hideous. [I do not want any elapids, vipers, coral or any other type of *known* potentially deadly and/or known deadly snake.]

1. I am not a tall individual, nor do I have a med.-Lg. stature. I don't want the snake to get so large, as to not be easily handled by myself.
2. I want something different, one that is arboreal/semi-arboreal, not black or mostly, not hideously speckled, or solid brown. I don't want it to be known for causing serious medical problems if bitten by it.

I don't believe that is too much to ask, I could be much pickier. I hope this explains "Why I ask so many questions", and "Why I want to learn what I can, before I purchase an animal".

I've got quite a few in mind but can't seem to locate them, any suggestions?

I don't really want a venomoid, not with the "exposure" they're getting from animal rights activists. I am willing to have a non-venomous species as well, just the more exotics/tropicals that catch my attention are rear-fanged. I am willing to have another U.S. native species, just not any of the before mentioned (original post), except LTR's. I want something "different" & not so common (over exposed). That's why I bought my LTR, and I was picky about his eyes (no bug-eyes).

I have looked into them, as much as I could locate. There's not much out there on Leptodeira septentrionalis(Northern Cat-eye) or Leptodeira annulata(Banded Northern Cat-eye). I haven't found anyone in the US that has any, & they're a protected species only found in Texas & below. I haven't been able to locate any C.American/Mexican or S.American Import/Export. Boigas are also extremely hard to locate, or the owners stateside(US) just aren't interested in sharing their information.
I am having a lot of trouble locating anything other than Faqs/care/descriptions, and the occasional picture.

That's one of only a few Central/South American snakes available Stateside. It's not really a breed I've even thought about. It just doesn't give me the feeling of wanting one. You know the feeling, like you just really have to get one? I get that feeling with quite a few of the Cat-eye colubrids, I just can't find any.
That's why I posted these, to look up some suggestions and see what I find.

You could always post a wanted ad in the kingsnake.com classifieds (link at top of page). Cat-eyed Snakes probably fall under the "other snakes" category on that page...

LLLReptiles recently posted an ad for Madagascar Cat-eyed Snakes on that page but if you want another kind it really may be your best bet to post a wanted ad and see what happens.

Serpents_Touch Sep 28, 2007 09:26 AM

I could do that (if) I had a paid membership, but mine's not. But the Cat-eye snakes I'm the most interested in, are either Boiga(Asian) or Leptodeira(US down thru S.America). But it's an endangered native here in the US, only being in extreme southern Texas, but thriving elsewhere.

I have thought about them, & almost picked one up 2yrs ago. I changed my mind when the owner said, "I can never touch/feed him without being bitten repeatedly.". That was the only one available to purchase in my area. They're not really popular around here because of "typical temperment", and the color morphs are even harder to get or too expensive for me at the moment.
But they're not crossed off my list just yet. I still have the Exotic Reptile Show to attend in November.

With the thousands of species of non-venomous - mild snakes out in the world, I don't call that picky. I just don't want what multiple thousands of people already own. I want it to be somewhat unique, or at least kind-of unique for where I live. I'd love to own a beauty snake, but they're never available in my area. The stores here only bring in popular(::yawns: species. Other than that, there's rarely anything that *strikes a cord* with me. I never seem to either have time or money, when the reptile exhibit comes here. But I will still attempt to go every time it comes around, maybe one day I'll actually make it. But I still appreciate any suggestions you've given.

if you want a buety than buy it off the classifieds or a breeder who ships.

if your waiting for a rare snake to come to a store near you than your going to be waiting forever. stores almost always only have balls, boas, corns, some times kings and milks and i saw a bull once. its because breeders dont want just anybody off the street to buy snakes that are anything harder to care for than corn. another reason is because your average snake customer at pet stores are one time buyers who want a cool pet and half of those dont have a clue what thier doing, would you want one of them getting thier hands on a retic, a green tree python, an amozon tree boa or anything venomous? its bad enough they have snakes at all

Very true indeed. But we do have one guy who buys/sells/breeds snakes like: Burmese pythons, Green anacondas, mixed anacondas, Retics, etc. He also does more common snakes as well. We do have a more "high-end" pet store that sells Argentine boas & such, but 90% of their stock is either common or top-end( $300 ). I wouldn't want to know what they'd charge for a custom order, (if) they would even do it..

You should check with some of the importers here in Florida. They will ship right to your door.

If your afraid of an amazon biting you stay away from a mangrove.

Blecha Oct 03, 2007 11:00 PM

No offense but if you think $300 is "top-end", you're probably not going to find anything that is "rare". Good luck. I wish I had your problem of being too picky, my problem seems to be that I love them all too much and am constantly needing more space for "just one more cage"...

lol, that's my problem too!!! I don't think I've ever seen a snake that I didn't want lol When I went to a show last year, it took everything I had to keep from buying a dozen, and my wife doesn't help any b/c when I see something I like, I'll say "I like that" and she'll simply say "then get it!" not very helpful when you are trying restrain yourself!

phew! that was a looooooong thread!

it has already been touched upon, but i'll say it again...

you probably aren't going to find anything "rare" for under $300...

and you would be VERY lucky to find a rare, handleable, inexpensive snake at a local pet store.

you need to look online & have something shipped to you;

1. most animals online, even with shipping, are cheaper than pet stores.

2. it's easier to find captive born animals which are often tamer

3. there is more of a readily available variety.

if you are interested in beauty snakes, you can pick one up here on kingsnake in the classifieds for around $100, give or take.

there are cave dwellers, pines, bulls, tons of different rat snakes...maybe even some sort of king/corn/milk hybrid?

when it comes down to it, its your decision...but you must realize that when you ask for opinions, and are given many but turn every one down without a second thought, people will get irritated with you & will likely not want to help you the next time you have a question!

just some thoughts
