sandman221 Sep 26, 2007 11:08 PM

for some reason i cant seem to find any rat pups local but there is a place that has small rats. what weight would u start to feed them rats instead of multipule mice. my 06 male pastel will take atleast 3 adult mice every week and my 07 spider female usually takes 2 adult mice every week. should i be feeding rats instead of the mice? thanks in advance oh hears a few pics of them

I dont know where your located to tell you where to get rats from locally. If you do frozen there are several well known suppliers rodentpro, mice direct, american rodent etc etc. As far as when to feed rats I would switch them immeadtley. I feed my balls rats from meal one. If they wont take rats from meal one I try each and every feed til they take. If they are super picky to switch you could scent the rat with a mouse or try african softfurs first. Good Luck

What's the most effective way to do this? I have a picky female that refuses fuzzy rats but jumps on mice.

Should I use my frozen mice in the freezer to scent the rat? Or should I get a live one and let the mouse and rat crawl over each other?

Thanks

If you are feeding 2 and 3 adult mice a week, you could go to small rats right now. The snakes in the pics look plenty big enough for small rats. I wouldn't recommend the ASF rats unless a last resort. Once they go to those you can pretty much expect to feed them those for life.
Nice pictures. The little herper looks very interested. Keep him into it!

thanks i will give it a try next week. ya the lil herper is getting more into it everytime i bring the snakes out. he just loves them. hes a squeezer tho, so he doesnt get to hold them on his own until he learn to do it gently.

I started feeding small rats when my snakes could easily eat 2 mice a sitting. From the pictures, yours look big enough to be eating small rats. My young girls are roughly the same size and have been eating small rats for a few weeks now.
