How often do you feed?

Alanna Sep 27, 2007 05:03 AM

Ok so here is my problem. I have read in numerous books that you should feed your Leo every other day when it reaches adulthood. My questions are 1. Is this correct and how many mealies should i feed her & 2. What age does adulthood start? (I have no intention of breeding)

Adults are fine fed every 2-3 days, or 2-3 times a week. How many mealies depends on the size of the leo and of the mealies. Adulthood is generally based on size in my mind, not age per se. But roughly 10 months or so sounds about right. Basically when they stop growing, they're grown lol.

My Leo is about 10 months old and i feed her everynight. She is roughly 9 inches long and still sheds. I normally feed her 8-10 mealies a night and each night see eats them all within a few minutes but lately she wont eat them all and thats what has me suspicious to her being full.

Adults do still shed, just not as often as younger ones who are growing rapidly. 8-9 mealies every night sounds like a lot. I'd cut her back to every other night, esp. if she isn't eating as much. It is most likely due to the fact that summer is now over, but if it continues, or she won't eat at all, or starts losing weight, then a fecal should be conducted.

Leopard Gecko manual says mature size is usually reached in 14-18 months, with 10 being the fastest it can happen, and for some it takes up to 24 months. Mine did decrease in appetite when she reached adult size - she went from eating 4-5 large crickets every night down to 3-4 every other night, and then 3-4 every 3rd night. If you've got a gram scale and a ruler handy, some size & weight data might be helpful in determining adulthood. For example, mine's almost 10 inches long and a shade under 60 grams, and she's a bit over 2 years old now.
