sexing adult Black MilkSnakes

bms619 Sep 27, 2007 07:53 AM

I was recently questioned re my certainty that i have a true pair of 05 black milksnakes,male/female;..or did i just rely on the breeder who sold them to me to have sexed and reported correctly. I don't recall if i did sex them myself .The snakes are both 4.5 feet long and their tails, from all angles, appear so very similar...I assume at this size they must be probed to be sexed correctly now..I'm in the NYC area and wonder if there is anyone local who has the appropriate probes and experience to sex these snakes for me.Thankyou

If you can't find somebody in the area who will do it for you I would suggest you buy probes on Ebay for next to nothing and it really isn't that hard to do on your own. The main thing is that you can handle snakes well and don't force the probe. Follow all directions and use some kind of lubricant. I was very cautious at first but I feel more comfortable doing this than popping now. It really isn't hard if you have control of the snake. Adults are easier also just don't use too big of a probe.

The attached image states ownership so I thought it would be OK to post ... also there is a link to Kathy Love's videos on probing snakes. (She also has some probes for sale)

I don't know if you are planning to attend the Long Island Herp show this coming weekend (10/6) at Farmingdale Collage.. but, if you are going bring your snakes with you, find my table and i will probe them for you..

Can't get any easier than that!
