Termites!?!?!?

darkstarluke Sep 27, 2007 09:09 AM

So yesterday i was cleaning up some poop and noticed some little bugs crawling around on the paper towel (i take the poop out with a plastic fork and put it on a paper towel then throw it out). i started rooting through the bedding (cedar mulch bought from petsmart for reptiles) and found them all over. so, i was worried that they were mites. I am a biologist with access to a microscope and all the fixins so i took a sample of the substrate and went through it at work. I found 2 termites in this small sample. i am a taxonomist and know the difference between mites and termites the main difference being termites are not true mites. mites are arachnids and termites are more like ants.

what should i do to get rid of them? should i ditch the mulch and how should i prep the new mulch to make sure there are no mites?

I'd get rid of the Cedar altogether.

Get rid of the cedar immediately. Cedar is toxic to snakes and causes respiratory problems. Do yourself and your snakes a favor and use newspaper as a substrate.
