First Cyclura

I've always been fascinated by Rock iguanas...since the first time I saw one in Tom Crutchfield's shop in Bushnell, Florida nearly 20 years ago. I believe it was a Grand Cayman Iguana...huge lizard and he had free run of the shop!

I have been out of the hobby for 10 years and decided this time, as opposed to having 2 rooms full of different species, to just concentrate on the few species I really like.

My three personal favorites are C Lewisi, C. N. Caymanensis, and C.n. nubila. Do I keep searching for purebred Caymanensis and Lewisi or am I stuck with hybrids due to CITES laws? I live in Northern Nevada close to Reno/Tahoe (low humidity, hot dry summers and moderately cold winters) so whichever I keep will be indoors 4-6 months of the year.

Any suggestions?

you can get caymanensis and nubila. You are not going to find a pure lewisi, certainly not legally. all are great. nubila and some kind of Cayman x are the easiest to find.

Any sources you reccomend? I'm leaning toward a pair of Cubans. However a nice pair of LewisiXCaymanensis hybrids would be nice. Any input or pictures of Cuban/Cayman hybrids and are they worth getting into?

I like the Rhinos, but really want to stick with one species for now.

hey man its nice to know that there are other cyclura fans out here! i live in sparks, and i own two cuban rocks, that i will hopefully be able to breed next season, but they are still growing. yes it is really dry out here, a have to spray and soak mine a lot. i think it might be difficult to breed them out here but im going to try. did you go to the sacramento reptile expo and see the huge cuban rock on display at IRCF

Cool, we're neighbors!

I did go to the show and saw the Binns and that Cuban...also loved the Rhino at the dealer across from them but thought $1400 was wayyyyyy too much...too each his own (I guess and more power to them if they get it!

The big Cuban at ythe IRCF booth won my wife over...she's not into reptiles at all, but thought it was the coolest animal at the show and wants one now!

yeah he was awesome i hope mine will get that big, but they are puerto rican strain so they probably wont, but he sure was beautiful. so was that rhino at reptile guru, but yeah he was overpriced. i picked up a couple of tegus, myself. i got a red x black and white baby who seems pretty cool. Did you get anything? If you get any cyclura, youll have to send me pix.
Thanks, Josh

I have a few emals out there, seems people have lizards but don't want my money!!!

I almost left the show with a pair of beardies, a mangrove monitor, a blackthroat, a bunch of red-eyes and a matamata...then I had to remind myself...I didn't want to end up like I was years ago with rooms full of cages of miscellaneous herps.

I want these Cycluras and that's what I'm focusing on!

I did pick up a budgett's frog, though!

huckandtuck Oct 02, 2007 09:08 PM

yeah thats cool man, my girlfriend wouldnt let me leave without a pair of red eye treefrogs, but now im feeling like im going to have to join reptiholics anonymous to keep me away from all the herps.

I'm considering one of last year's Cuban females and maybe a male of last years Cayman/Cuban Crosses from David...maybe I'll call him in the morning.

gisherps Oct 02, 2007 10:47 PM

Right on. Says the # is message only and he responds to email faster. Also, after all my questions and want of a little personal attention~you know email is so impersonal, and I'm giving him money for something I got not even a photo of-specifically THE animal, you know~ I still haven't spoken to him personally but I have a blue reserved waiting on payment. Eh,he's got a good rep so I guess it'll all come out in the wash but I do like to "see a thing work" before I buy it. Or at least a photo!

Went with a Cuban/Cayman male hybrid and a female Cuban...both a year old 12"-16" long.

Now I need to build cages!
