Won't eat greens!

SandDog Sep 27, 2007 09:52 AM

Hi Guys. Back in August I posted that my beardie stopped eating after being dewormed. PHLdyPayne suggested that I use a probiotic which I have been doing. She is eating crickets again but will not touch her salad. I've tried a wide variety of vegetables (even cactus leaves) but she's just not interested. I put butterworms in with her veggies but she's very good at eating them without touching the salad. What else can I try?

i am currently having the same problem. mine loves fuzzys and insects but recently he wont eat any greens. When he is munching on greens i slip a dandelion green in his mouth and he eats it but thats all

I suggest just offering greens only, no insects at all, for a couple days. Try hand feeding greens.

Silkworms and hornworms are good to offer with greens as these two caterpillars tend to cling to whatever they are placed upon, thus increasing the chance your dragon will eat greens with their insects.

I've tried that. She's just not interested. If I sound frustrated it's because I am!!! I swear I do everything right and neither of my dragons seem to be normal. I have a rankins that didn't eat for the first 4 months that I had him. Now he eats only phoenix worms and nothing else. Their cages are large enough, the temps are correct, I offer every type of food available (haven't tried hornworms yet though; I'm going to order some today). What could I be doing wrong?

BTW, I have 2 snakes that do everything right. Maybe I should stick to snakes

You might not be doing anything wrong.

One of my females hasn't eaten hardly anything in the last month. She is basicly inactive but stays on the basking spot. She only becomes active when her mate comes out to torture her. lol. That's about every 3 weeks for a day or 2. But, he won't eat when he's out either. Another of my females I haven't seen at all for over a month. It's just that time of year.

The best tool to have is a weight scale. If they don't eat much but maintain their weight or gain then it's fine.

Sometimes we spoil our pets. We offer what they like best and they eat it when they're really not hungry. The first female I mentioned above will eat the couple newly shed superworms I offer in my hand from time to time but if I put them in her regular dish they'll be there all day. 8 months of the year she's a voracious salad eater but hasn't touched it in weeks either.

Don't get too tied to Hornworms. They have a very high moisture content and will cause really loose stools if fed too often. They're great for egg laying females in season though.

Thanks BDlvr. That makes me feel much better. She seems really healthy. Weight is good and she's pretty active. I'll just keep offering greens and one day maybe she'll decide she wants them. She ate a bunch of butterworms last night and lots of crickets the night before so she's getting nourishment. I just worry that she's missing important vitamins from the veggies.

One of my males really never eats any bugs and I worry about the lack of protien in his diet occaisionally but figure he knows best.

In your case I'd just supplement with a multivitamin regularly. I use the RepCal Herptivite and think it's the best for BD's.

There is no 2 dragons the same I swear. I have 12 and all have different likes/dislikes. lol.

I think you're right. She must know what she needs. Thanks for the help.

I agree .. I have a female beared dragon i bought from the hamberg show 2 years ago ,
and she is in the right temps and everything she just does not like to eat her greens anymore but use to love them .
she does eat crickets occasionly but right now is the time she usually stopps
shes a wierd little girl... as shes not very large dragon

she loves soaks and kinda funny she loves to drink out of her water dish .. yeah i know beared dragons dont drink from bowls but my one beared dragon does xD

She's beautiful. That's too cute that she drinks out of the waterbowl.

I got mine from the Hamberg show too - in June. She loved all things food when I got her but slowly got less interested. I liked it when she would jump off her rock and run to the food. Oh well, maybe she'll do that again soon.
