size of boa enclosure?

fantasyxbabygurl Sep 27, 2007 02:32 PM

More than once ive been told that a 4'x2.5'x4' enclosure is too big for a 5'boa on two seperate forums. Is this just advise that they can be kept in a smaller space without problem or could so much space be the problem. Im making the encloser that size becuase id just like to see it in that big of a space. i have the space and would like to use it in this way. But i did read that it can be stressful if there cage is too big for them. i didnt think this was a problem but ive had many people tell me to cut down the size.

Snake keepers tend to be minimalists when it comes to caging, especially in the US. There are good arguments for having cages that aren't huge. One is simply this: caging should be able to fit through a doorway in case it needs to be moved in/out of a room.

For that reason, keep the cage a size that you can remove from the room. Or, use two halves that bolt together to make one large cage. Boaphile Plastics sells cages that bolt together.

If you have hides, large cages are fine for adult boas. Babies like security, and so a small cage makes some sense for babies.

A cage that large will be very difficult for most people to properly control temps and humidity in, especially for a boa.

A 4'x2.5' base is great for a boa, but height need not be more than 18" and that is with a shelf installed.

Is that length x width x height or what?

Regardless, I definitely think you can make this work. German humanitarian laws require a 5x5x5 cage for something the size or a large cornsnake. Not to say that the Germans have it all figured out (although they are very successful breeders of some very difficult species) but it does show a major paradigm shift from the US way of thinking. For the record, most Germans get away with ignoring their humanitarian laws but still use massive cages.

Currently keeping a small collection of various Gonyosoma. Both G. janseni and G. oxycephala.
