A few Leo Questions

nile_keepr Sep 27, 2007 11:25 PM

Ok, at present, I have a single male albino, prolly about 1.5 years old. Ive been keeping him in a 20 (10?) gal. and he seems quite happy.

Still, Id like to move him into something bigger, and I have a few questions:

1. How large of an enclosure should I be looking at to house at LEAST 2 geckos (said male and at least 1 female to be purchased in the future)?

2. What is the preferred substrate? Ive had him on both coconut fiber and shale, and I think he prefers the shale. All the same, because its hard to get large, flat pieces (and impossible to get ones with straight corners) naturally, Im trying to find something else to use. Crickets and other feeders get down into the rocks and are harder for the gecko(s) to catch. Id prefer to stick with a naturalistic setup (to some degree) and would like any suggestions you might be able to offer.

3. What is the suggested lighting setup for leos? At present, I use under tank heating with slight warming from a heat light that the leo cage shares with about 3 others. Is that good enough?

4. Whats the suggested food items? I offer small crickets and meal/wax worms, which he seems to enjoy well enough...

5. As I said, Im looking to maintain a somewhat naturalistic setup- could anyone offer some suggestions as to plants that might survive well with leos, or perhaps share a pic or 2 of their setup? Would be much appreciated.

Theres a lot of caresheets which will help you with this.
Check out my site, I have a caresheet available.

I use paper towels, which isnt that aesthetic, but efficient. You may want to try fine grain calci sand.
I think mealworms are the best feeders (voice of experience, Ive been doing this for over 10 years),
My rule of thumb is at least 1.5 square feet of roaming space for each gecko. Also have a lot of hiding spots. You can make your own caves or buy them cheap via the net.
