I clean my cages with a 1/10 bleach/water mix and it works great! Just make sure it dries completely before you put animals back in!

For just standard cleaning - soap and water will work fine - once a month or so it's a good idea to disinfect the cage and I usually recommend a 5% bleach solution or Nolvasan (chlorhexidine) - both of which need to be applied and left on for several minutes before being rinsed. If you are using bleach be sure to let it air out for several minutes (until you can't smell the bleach any longer) before replacing fresh substrate and clean accessories.

Try household vinegar with a little lemon juice, and a touch of natural dish liquid. Been using this for over 12 years. Vinegar destroys bacteria, etc. much better than bleach or any of the products sold for reptiles (IMHO).

Novalsan (Chlorhexidine). It's the same stuff vets use in their offices for sanitizing things after clinic visits. You can buy it at www.beanfarm.com and it comes in a concentrated bottle that you just mix a little bit with water. It lasts a long time. It kills viruses and bacteria, dissolves just about every waste matter you'll find with snakes (poop, urates, whatever), and is 100% safe to use in their enclosures. Just spray, let it sit for a minute, wipe it out with a paper towel, and done. I've been using it for 8 months now and I love it -- I wouldn't go back to anything else.

OR you can spend alot less money and get chlorhexidine from www.valleyvet.com

They sell concentrate by the gallon and it's fairly inexpensive to ship. I've used it to wipe off snakes if they've decided to go Poo Painting, you can use it to rinse out mouths, clean tubs and water bowls. I also use it to rinse out abscesses on rats if they get them. It also gets urates up surprisingly well. With Nolvasan, you CANNOT use it on the snakes.

If things are really dirty, the tub gets tossed outside for a soap/bleach scrub, but if it's not bad and there's just some urates in a corner, the tub gets a spray with the chlorhexidine and wiped out.

It's also a good fungal/bacterial cure.

Novalsan is just the brand name for Chlorhexidine, so why can't you use it on animals?

"Poo Painting" -- That actually made me laugh out loud, that is the perfect description for what it is. LOL!
