caudo update

Neal_ Sep 28, 2007 09:18 AM

The females seem to be laying eggs, but I haven’t been able to observe any copulation until the end of last week. I saw them copping between the bark pieces a few times over the last weekend. It looked like the real deal, but I didn’t get a pic. I’m keeping an eye on that female. Here are some recent pics.

Male (got a good look at both penes)

Female halfway in/out of cork tube is the one that I’m keeping an eye on.

Male & somewhat ambiguous looking caudo from Robin.

As you can see they are extremely miserable in their tiny trough. Look at the bug-eyes on the one. No doubt suffering from permanent nervousness, induced by their natural enemy (me) lurking above them. Actually, the one has large eyes and is very alert when I shove a camera and flash in its face. I’m not 100% sure of its sex. Robin sent him/her to me last month, so I have 1.3.1 caudolineatus now.

The depth of the substrate is only about twice their total length. These are tiny monitors. I reckon that is deep enough, since I’ve never heard of anyone providing their charges with substrate as proportionally deep. If anyone has their 2' lizards on 4’ of dirt, I’d love to see it. Cheers

Hey Neal, They're looking good thanks for the update! I really like the last picture, the arm wrap one. Yeah, they appear terribly stressed out over being kept in that trough and all...must be scared to death for them to eat roaches from your fingers like that! hahahaha Hope to see you get some good eggs soon! Cheers, Lance

like the "feces" substrate you got going on there, you may want to clean that out from time to time.

Neal_ Sep 30, 2007 11:23 AM

Hah, let’s see your monitors, kid.

you should install a toilet in there for all the "feces" you have in there.... ha ha ha ha ha that guy is nuts...good luck with the group keep up the good work.

Hi Neal. Great looking monitors. Nice troughs as well.

Maybe you could help me with some ideas as to how I can provide my water and niles with fourteen to sixteen feet of substrate. Maybe bust the concrete floor out of my basement, ha ha ha.

Roger

Thanks Roger. These caudolineatus are super fun. They are a whole lot of monitor in tiny package. They are quite bold, jumping around like Argus, when they’re hungry, and they hold on like a pit bull when they get the tip of your finger.

Are your monitors already 7-8’, Roger? Dang, you are doing even better than I thought.
Providing large monitors with plenty of dirt is definitely much more of a challenge than with tiny monitors. While 14-16’ would be excessive even for large monitors, I suspect that many larger monitors would use more than 2-3’ of substrate, which seems about the most that even good keepers can provide. Cheers
