TRUE DWARF BURM

amazonreptile Sep 28, 2007 11:29 AM

This lovely three and half footer female has been in the USA for three years. She eats well so size is genetic, not stunting.

Just after I took the pic with AJ she jumped up to bite me. Got her body entirely off the substrate and bit the camera. I am glad the camera was between me and her! Also happy she is non-venomous!

that's really interesting. Is she from a group of pythons exibiting the same trait, or is she an oddity? She's about the same size as my baby burmese, Pixil.
I wonder though, if she is an oddity, how will you prove her out? If you breed her to a regular size male (if that is even possible) won't there be complications? Are there males her size that you can get?

I'm a novice, so excuse any stupid questions.

While true dwarf burms are not in abundance, they are available. We currently have 3.4 dwarfs. Here is a pic of one of our males breeding a normal sized albino granite female. This pairing resulted in 19 babies that are half dwarf double het albino granite that are easily handled.

I will agree that most imported dwarfs are aggressive, but there are exceptions to the rules. We have one female that is sweet as can be. Her pic is also attached.

There are captive born dwarfs as well. These do not show the same aggression as the imports. So this trait does not seem to be passed on.

How much do captive born dwarf burm babies cost on average? I have wanted a burm for such a long time, just am not comfortable with the size. Having one not much bigger than a large female BP would be so fantastic.

True Dwarf Burm is am "island form" in which evolution cause the population to develop smaller. Likely because the island had no large food for larger specimens to feed upon. Thus to survive the snakes had to be able to reproduce at a smaller size. In this case the smallest have passed their genes on to make these dwarf burms.

She really is smaller than an adult female ball python!

I also have dwarfs (I'm in the UK) - the animals are 2003 CB (?) - female is probably the most aggressive snake I have come across and is less than 5.5ft - the male is quite agreable and about 4ft 6"

They eat as often as my other burms . . Hopefully will produce some offspring this year.
