AFRIQUENLIGNE (Paris, France) 22 September 07 Niger to host conference on crocodiles
Paris, France: The First West African Conference on crocodiles will take place 13-15 Nov. in W. Parc, 50km from Niamey, the capital of Niger, organisers told PANA here Friday.
"This conference is aimed at setting up a vast network of West African representatives who will take part from now on in every world congress on crocodiles," said one of the organisers, Luc Fourgeirol.
He noted that French-speaking countries in Africa were lagging behind in the protection of crocodiles.
"English-speaking countries in Africa usually take part in the world conference on crocodiles. In Southern Africa, some countries practice crocodile farming. It's not the case in West Africa," said Fougeirol from a "crocodile farm" in France.
He however noted the progress made in West Africa to raise the awareness on the necessity to protect the crocodiles, regretting their extinction in the rivers in Burkina Faso
"Twelve West African citizens took part in 2006 in the last world conference on crocodiles held in France. We want to keep the momentum to control the extinction of crocodiles in some rivers like in Burkina Faso," Fougeirol said.
