with feeding their beardies "bearded dragon bites" by nature zone. i've been struggling with a couple of finicky eaters that won't take greens unless pellets are present and if the pellets are left in the cage while i am at work fruitflies will be all over the place when i get home. This has been an ongoing struggle since the beginning of august. *sigh* .. i've tried the pellets without juice and they won't eat them ..and when i don't give them the pellets spike and rajah just look at me like HELLO where are my pellets. Thank god for my new baby Dojo who eats no matter what!! they nibble on their greens and pout all day...until i give in and give them the pellets (which bring the fruitflies) or give them crickets. i don't want to wean them off pellets.. just a quick solution until fall comes and the bugs go away (non-feeder bugs of course )

Btw in my house august means fruitflies.. something about the weather and all the fresh garden veggies

They work great! I dont have a single dragon from baby to adult that will refuse them. Nature zone did something good because when they first lick them(smell) they go crazy for them like a shark does when it smells blood. It's a feeding frenzy! I havent had any negitive results so far. If anyone has please let me know!

peace,
nathan

Are you using the "bearded dragon bites" as a staple food? or just as a snack? If it's okay for beardies to eat that stuff regularly i'm going to convert to that stuff instead of live feeders.

Oh okay, i thought those things were like a substitute for live feeders or something and could be used as a staple. Right now i'm feeding my beardie veggies and pellets for 5 days of the week and the other two days she is fed silkies, crix, supers or butter worms.

and see how it works out.. but i just don't like to rely heavily on man made products as a staple.. i guess techinally you could call what i do with the pellets as a staple diet and the feeders are extra.. i've seen it done.. a primarly pellet and green diet.. and with juvies they tend to grow slower... it might work just fine on an adult.. my adults are pretty chubby..and could probably survive without the pellets or just the pellets and greens without feeders.. but i think they are happier with a well rounded meal..and a nice round tummy..

Variety. I feed my dragons that plus two other kinds of pellets(rep cal and T-rex). Plus all their greens and other fruits and veggies. Plus main staple of crickets. And mealies and roaches too. Besides when they eat their crickets they go after the nature zone food the most verocious out of anyhting. I dont know of anyone who uses just one form of food. Dry or moist. Ive heard of people doing it but I myself like feeding them insects and thats a lot of excersize for them too.

nate

If you have problem feeders try nature zone , then give them crickets again when they start eating well again.

the screen onto the four pieces of wood after you connect them... no fruitflies can get in them. On the post below of the adult enclouses, the quarantine tank has a home made one like this.

if you only knew how many screens i have made in the last week..hehe.. no seroiusly thank you for that idea.. i was looking at my beardies cages today and inbetween the back of the cage and the screen these is a signifigant hole in which flies and other bugs could get in... i've made 5 new screens in the past week and my fingers are raw...but since i've got to make another mouse bin.. i'll whip up a new screen.. one question though.. if the screening is too small won't there be a problem with proper uvb absorbtion...because it will be filtered..

thanks

UVB would be going throught the open weave areas, reptariums are made with mesh and people raising beardies and chameleon's in them don't report problems.

You could only use the screen top when they have their pellets and tell them to eat faster!!

Other thought, you know that fruit flies are safe for beardies to eat? ewwwww, sprinkles!

lissag25 Aug 23, 2003 12:34 AM

when i'm not looking..hehe.. those fruitflies are really just an annoyance.. terribly little bugs imo..if only i had a frog that ate them

thanks alissa
