red sided garter

Jerry Sep 29, 2007 12:28 AM

found this snake right outside an oyster restraunt that I took my wife to the other day for lunch. The nicest looking garter I have ever seen. Couldn't help but to bag it. It musked all over my hand, so I had to wash up before we ate. Anyhow, I put some ggoldfish in with it. Has not taken any yet. First time try with gartersnakes since I was a kid. Any tips appreciated

Nice... Did you catch this snake in Marin/Sonoma County? I've caught some great-looking ones here, but that one is spectacular.

Also, you might try feeding Rosy Red Minnows instead of goldfish. I've found they are usually better accepted than goldfish, and I've recently heard from a few people that goldfish contain a certain enzyme that is harmful to snakes on a long-term basis. Or you might consider skipping the fish idea altogether and try and get him on mice right away if he's big enough for pinks (try fish-scenting them). Whatever you choose to do, he's probably not going to be very interested in eating for a week or two.

I offered my Puget Sound Garter some worm-scented mice a few days after I got her, and while she seemed interested, I couldn't get her to actually take them. When I went to feed her the next week, she took a whole bunch of unscented FT pink mice immediately.

Beautiful snake!! stay away from goldfish, can cause serious neurological problems. feeder rosies or minnows will work, also frozen thawed trout chunks works well. also, it may take a week or 2 before the snake will eat, they need time to adjust to captivity.

Thanks, it didn't take the goldfish, I guess you knew that...LOL! I will give it some time to adjust to captivity.

The snake was found in Marin county.
